Facility Engineer, In Situ
The Opportunity
The In Situ Applications Conformance team is looking for a Facility Engineer who is keen to work to expand their knowledge of the regulatory environment within Alberta and wants to be an integral part of the decisions that are made by the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) in the in situ sector. If you are motivated to be part of a team that has a strong emphasis on continuous improvement, building an inclusive and equitable culture and is focused on making risk-informed decisions based on technical evidence then this position may be the next step in your career.
As a Facility Engineer you will be responsible for reviewing the facility and processing components of in situ oil sands projects, along with their associated environmental impacts, and making recommendations that ultimately inform decisions made under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) and the Oil Sands Conservation Act (OSCA). You will interact with other technical and environmental professionals to look at proposals holistically, liaising with applicants, clearly articulating risks associated with each application and making recommendations to the leadership team. Being a part of the Conformance team, there will also be opportunities to participate in existing desktop surveillance activities and help build new ones. If this sounds exciting to you and aligns with your personal goals then this opportunity may be your next career step.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Review, coordinate and make recommendations using a risk informed review process for the facility components of proposed in situ oil sands projects. This includes drafting approvals with site-specific conditions to ensure impacts are sufficiently mitigated and applicable Directives and rules are adhered to.
  • Work with a diverse network of specialists across the AER, industry and government to remain current on emerging issues, identify opportunities for improvement and help educate parties on regulatory requirements associated with the in situ oil sands.
  • Perform desktop surveillance activities and approval maintenance to compliment application and audit reviews to ensure appropriate risk-informed compliance and assurance mechanisms are in place throughout the life cycle of in situ projects.
  • Support sector initiatives and enterprise projects by gathering, compiling and presenting technical information required by the team and assisting with the implementation of project outcomes into core business processes.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, mechanical, environmental, or oil & gas engineering.
  • Applicants must have 3 - 5 years of related experience in process, environmental or facility/industrial engineering experience within the in situ sector.
  • Applicants must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or Engineer-In-training (E.I.T) with APEGA.
  • Basic understanding of Alberta’s regulatory framework and associated legislation and enactments, particularly EPEA and OSCA, and how they apply to various application scenarios.
  • Critical thinking ability to think beyond the information presented and to use a multidisciplinary approach to problem solving and provide solutions.
  • Beginner to intermediate awareness of project management principles.
  • A collaborator who believes in the importance of building strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders and colleagues, teamwork and fostering a positive organizational culture.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with an emphasis on technical writing and an ability to assess risks and present conclusions in the form of recommendations to decision makers.

Additional Information:

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
  • If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email Peopleservices@aer.ca. Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.
  • Additional training in First Aid, H2S Alive and Driver training may be required.

What we offer you:

  • Great benefits from your first day of work.
  • Flexible Work Program - hybrid work and flexible hours .
  • Defined benefit pension plan.
  • Flexible benefits program options, including Personal & Health spending account(s).
  • Generous vacation entitlement and flex days.
