Description:

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Manager of Financial Planning, the Financial Analyst Co-op Student is responsible for assisting the Accounting Team and Budget Office Team in the Financial Management Services Department in supporting accounting functions, developing and analyzing budgets, conducting financial forecasts, and supporting new financial system implementation. This co-op opportunity provides an excellent learning experience for students pursuing a career in finance, accounting, or public administration within a municipal setting.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in finance, accounting, public administration, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in financial analysis techniques and tools.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work with large sets of financial data.
  • Proficient in using spreadsheet software (e.g., Microsoft Excel) and financial management systems.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with an ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of municipal finance principles and budgeting processes is considered an asset.
  • Proven completion of Ministry of Labour Worker Health and Safety Awareness training.
  • Demonstrated commitment to enhancing a safety culture.
    Hourly Rate: $20.28
    Expected Work Location: 50 Church Street, St. Catharines
    Expected Hours of Work: Currently Monday-Friday 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM

  • Assist with account payables and month/quarter end closing process.
  • Assist with journal entries, account reconciliations, and analyses.
  • Collaborate with the Budget Office Team and City Departments to understand budgetary needs, provide financial insights, and foster collaboration in the budget planning process.
  • Gather data, review financial performance reports, provide financial analysis, and support the development and monitoring of the annual municipal budget process.
  • Maintain account structures in the budget system in coordination with accounting team.
  • Participate in cost-benefit analysis for proposed projects, programs, and initiatives to evaluate their financial viability and potential impact on the City’s budget.
  • Assist system implementation team on user acceptance testing, data conversion and input, report designs, and internal training/education.
  • Propose and participate in initiatives to enhance budgeting and financial analysis processes, streamlining workflows, and increasing efficiency.
  • Performing all other job-related tasks or special projects as directed
