This is a grant funded time-limited (GFTL) position. This means it is a position that is paid entirely as the result of a grant. The duration of employment shall not exceed the life of the grant that funds the position. An employee appointed to a GFTL position is required to meet the minimum requirements for the classification. Further, an employee appointed to a GFTL position is designated as an unclassified (non-merit) employee. A GFTL employee is eligible to receive benefits at the same level as a classified (merit) employee in a permanent position.
By joining the Division of Forestry/Forest Protection Branch/Fire Section as a Forestry Program Specialist in Bell county, you will have the opportunity to significantly contribute to ensuring the programmatic integrity of the Firewise Program, and the consistent delivery of services to the public. During the performance of your assigned duties, you will interact on a daily/weekly basis with not only the public, but with branch personnel, branch management, and the division’s program staff.

Holders of the Forestry Program Specialist position will complete tasks such as:

  • Providing wildfire hazard mitigation technical assistance to homeowners, neighborhoods, communities, and counties.
  • Encouraging cities, counties, and fire departments to participate in proactive prevention and mitigation programs, adopt Community Wildfire protection Plans, and achieve recognized Firewise USA community status.
  • Developing, coordinating, and conducting Firewise workshops and prevention programs to interested parties. Administering Firewise Grants that are awarded to local communities.
  • Facilitate the CWDG program with local communities.
  • Participating in forest fire prevention and control.

Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in forestry, natural or physical science.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have four years of professional experience in forest products utilization, forest health, tree nursery and tree improvement, urban and community forestry, wildfire prevention and control, forest management stewardship assistance, natural resource management, conservation or four years of professional experience as a forester.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate study in forestry or related field will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in forest products utilization, forest health, nursery and tree improvement, urban and community forestry, wildfire prevention and control, forest management and stewardship assistance or related will substitute for the required education on a year for year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver’s license prior to appointment in this job classification. Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possess and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Work includes both administrative duties, which may involve frequent contact with field personnel and other agencies, and field duties which involve outdoor work at the tree nursery or forestlands in general. Working outdoors may occur during adverse weather conditions. A moderate amount of travel is required, in and out of state.
