job details
French and Spanish Teacher
Singapore
Start Date: August 2024
Region: Far East and South East Asia
School Curriculum: UK
The School
This international school opened in 2020 and is a collaboration with a top co-educational school in the UK and its four sister schools around the world - all of which are leading schools in their respective regions and which collectively educate more than 4,000 students. …
The school opened as a Pre-Prep (located in a purpose-built ‘Early Learning Village’) for children aged 18 months to 6 years and a Prep School. In August 2024, the Senior School will open with Years 7, 8 and 9.
The school aims to provide an inspiring education that prepares pupils for life in school and beyond. The school delivers a curriculum that incorporates the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage and English National Curriculum, together with a rich co-curricular programme.
Living and Working in Singapore
Mixing together a mass of different cultures, cuisines and architectural styles, Singapore is studded with vast showpiece constructions to complement its colonial-era hotels and buildings. Cutting-edge tourist developments continue to spring up. Shopping avenues and underground malls throb with life, as do the food courts, the riverside bars and the temple-dotted outlying neighbourhoods. Singapore is a very safe, clean, friendly place and ideal for a first time expat and being so close to other countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia means it’s cheap and easy to travel overseas.
Requirements
In August 2024, the Senior School will open with Years 7, 8 and 9. All Senior School teachers will teach across these three year groups in their first year, and a flexibility and enthusiasm for teaching French and Spanish to some upper Key Stage 2 pupils in the Prep School will be advantageous. The successful candidate will be able to teach at least one of these two languages to GCSE/IGCSE and A-level as the Senior School grows, and should be able to demonstrate a strong track record of delivering top academic results in public exams in previous roles.
This is an exciting opportunity for an educationalist to help shape the development of a secondary curriculum that will provide a springboard for pupils to go on to some of the world’s leading universities. Once in role, the Teacher of French and Spanish will be instrumental in ensuring that the modern foreign language provision in the Senior School aligns with the schools commitment to building a world-class academic institution, distinctive in its own right, but with the Brighton College DNA at its core.
The position of Teacher of French and Spanish represents a career-defining, professional challenge for a candidate who is excited by the opportunity of growing a love of languages in young people. As with all teaching posts, the successful candidate will share the aim of developing well-educated, respectful, and curious young men and women ready to take a full, active and positive role in the world.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take responsibility for the teaching, progress and attainment of all pupils in both languages in Years 7 to 9 from August 2024, and in at least one of the two languages for all other senior year groups in the following years.
  • Lead on all aspects of MFL curriculum planning and delivery, including preparation for the first IGCSE Year 10 cohort starting in August 2025.
  • Promote excellence, creativity and innovation in all areas of the MFL curriculum: speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar and cultural awareness.
  • Demonstrate commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Lead on all aspects of assessment, tracking and reporting for MFL.
  • Demonstrate the experience and ability to teach at least one of the two languages advertised across all relevant Key Stages (including IGCSE/GCSE and A-level), and the second language preferably to IGCSE/GCSE level.
  • Act as an outstanding classroom practitioner, with the ability to lead by example.
  • Devise and implement rigorous self-evaluation processes.
  • Devise and oversee the department’s extension and enrichment programme.
  • Demonstrate the experience and expertise needed to support pupils in future years with applications to leading universities, including Oxford and Cambridge and other world-class universities.
  • Ensure pupils have opportunities to prepare for, and participate in, global MFL competitions, providing appropriate stretch and challenge.
  • Devise and implement strategies for the progress and examination preparation of any pupils for whom Spanish or French is their first language: e.g. by offering bespoke off-timetable opportunities and tailored support. Such provision may include preparation for early entry for public examinations.
  • Work closely with the Heads of EAL and AEN to develop pathways for pupils requiring additional support.
  • Work with the Prep School middle and senior leaders to manage a smooth transition from Year 6 to Year 7.
  • Develop the required curriculum and department documentation, both for current and prospective parents.
  • Work with the Head of Admissions on the assessment of MFL levels at entry to the Senior School.
  • Contribute to the highest standards of safeguarding and to the school’s pastoral system, acting as a tutor for a Senior School year group.
  • Contribute to the co-curricular life of the school.
  • Any other reasonable management request.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in at least one of Spanish or French (or equivalent e.g. native level speaker proficiency in one of the two languages), with PGCE or equivalent.
  • Expert knowledge or experience of successfully delivering GCSEs/IGCSEs and A-level.
  • International experience (preferred but not essential)
  • Exemplifies the school values of Curiosity, Confidence and Kindness.
  • An international outlook and understanding of working in diverse environments.

Salary and Benefits
The school offers a competitive international remuneration package which includes housing allowance, tuition fee remission and private medical insurance. A full tuition fee remission is available for up to two dependent children, subject to a place being available and meeting entry requirements.
