Description:

The General Counsel will work with the Company Secretary to provide expert legal advice and services to the Trust. The post holder will work in partnership with the Chief People Officer (CPO), who is the senior responsible officer for employee relations issues in the trust, to ensure effective management of employment claims and Employment Tribunals.
The Trust undertakes a significant amount of research and commercialisation, which will need legal input as appropriate. This is an excellent opportunity to develop within a dynamic team and play a role in improving eye care for people.

Responsibilities:

Provide senior legal advice to the Trust.
Manage the organisation’s legal functions.
Oversee and identify the legal issues in business areas and their interrelationships.
Provide legal advice (directly or from external providers) and support to divisions and departments and the research team.
Support the CPO and HR team in the provision of an effective employee relations service by giving advice and support to the team on request and maintaining an oversight of all Employment Tribunals
To deliver these key duties, the Trust is looking for a qualified solicitor preferably with a background in the health sector in the UK.
Experience of contractual and commercial agreement is essential, along with experience of working with internal and external stakeholders. Effective communication skills and relationship building will be important for the successful applicant.

Provide a central point of contact in the role of in-house counsel, advising on legal and regulatory matters and providing advice and support where appropriate.
Manage the legal functions of the Trust as a portfolio, ensuring they are operating smoothly, that access is managed and services are provided within a framework.
Manage legal budgets ensuring appropriate access to external legal advice. Enable the CEO, Chair and the CPO to engage specialist legal advice as required.
Oversee and identify the legal issues in business areas and their inter-relationships, ensuring close liaison with Directors, Managers and budget holders so that appropriate matters are escalated for review in a timely manner.
Work with the Trust’s third-party legal suppliers to ensure best value for money advice within budget
