Description:

The paediatric gastroenterology service is currently led by a consultant paediatrician with a specialist interest, supported by a paediatric gastro specialist nurse (0.2WTE) and dietetic services. Our team work very closely with the Leeds Gastroenterology and Paediatric Surgical teams as our tertiary centre on a shared care principle for most IBD patients, short gut patients and complex gastro patients. The service currently cares for approximately 85-90 IBD patients along with other complex gastro patients. The current consultant and gastro specialist nurse attend the Leeds Virtual MDT meetings on a fortnightly basis where Bradford patients are discussed.
A close working relationship has been long-established and Leeds provide the endoscopy service for Bradford in addition to the rest of West Yorkshire. This post does not require the applicant to have endoscopy skills. In addition, the team work closely with one of the adult gastroenterologists to provide a transition service for young people with IBD. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering one specialist gastroenterology clinic per week, to include new patient referrals from GPs or consultant colleagues and follow-up patients.
It is expected that the post holder will provide ad hoc gastroenterology advice for both in-patients and out-patients, for consultant colleagues and for GPs, as well as supporting an advice service for families living with IBD and other chronic gastro conditions Our organization is committed to supporting the professional growth and expertise of our staff in the field of paediatric gastroenterology. As such, we will provide direct consultant support and offer opportunities to conduct clinics alongside our existing team. Additionally, the post holder will have the chance to work closely with regional specialists, participate in regional MDT (Multi-Disciplinary Team) meetings, and attend regional network meetings General Paediatric duties include 8 ward weeks/year with double Consultant of The Week cover for the Paediatric Wards. There is double Consultant of The Week cover for the Paediatric Wards on week days.
One Consultant is in charge of the Childrens Clinical Decision Area (including 9 x 24h short stay beds) and provides clinical support to the Step-Up Ambulatory Care Nurses looking after children at home. The other Consultant is in charge of the Childrens and Young People Unit (Ward 30) and conducts the daily hand overs and ward rounds. All children seen in CCDA and admitted to the Ward during the week will be officially under the care of the Ward Consultant unless already under the care of another Consultant. The consultants have agreed that they will not take their annual leave during their weeks on the wards.
The rota for the year is agreed quarterly so that outpatient sessions can be cancelled as appropriate. Duties will also include participation in the on call rota (all existing full time consultant posts have 2.13 PA/week for on-call duties which includes an allocation for weekend ward rounds) and a contribution to delivering the safeguarding service for non-sexual abuse assessments. (There are separate arrangements for assessing safeguarding sexual abuse which are not part of this post). The post holder will support the current named doctor, nurse and midwife in co-ordinating statutory safe guarding duties for the Trust, providing both internal and external assurance.
This will include supporting and advising colleagues in the clinical assessment and care of children and young people. This will include but not limited to : Training and supervision Development of polices and guidelines Represent the Trust in multi-agency forums/arena Audit and Quality assurance Contribute to the planning and strategic organisation of safeguarding/child protection services
