Description:

Responsibilities:

The purpose of this post is to contribute to the provision of mainstreamed cancer genetic counselling service to meet the needs of the St Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH) Regional Cancer Predisposition Services, as outlined in the NCCP Hereditary Cancer Model of Care.
The main base will be at the cancer genetic service at St James Hospital in Dublin and the post holder will be required to work with a network of colleagues across St Vincent’s Hospital.
The Cancer Genetic Service at St James Hospital provides a clinical cancer genetics service for individuals and families who have, or are at risk of having a hereditary cancer syndrome. We provide cancer genetic risk assessment, genetic testing and supportive counselling to families that are affected by, or at risk of, a hereditary cancer predisposition syndrome. Genetic counsellors are integral to the provision of a comprehensive cancer genetic service. In conjunction with the St James hospital cancer genetic counselling team, the SVUH mainstream genetic counsellor will have specialized training and experience in managing genomic risk and genomic testing. They will support mainstream clinicians to facilitate pre-test genetic consent to individuals and families to assist in shared decision making about genomic testing and related management options. The genetic counsellor will provide post-test genetic counselling to ensure relevant cancer risk assessments and management of hereditary cancer are made, support communication of genetic information within families, provide reproductive genetic counselling and supportive counselling to help individuals and families psychologically adapt to living with a cancer genetic diagnosis.
