Description:

In order to ensure your application is received by NAIT for thorough review and consideration, please apply directly through our Careers site at www.nait.ca/careers
Please note: This is a temporary position ending on or before January 31, 2025.
NAIT’s Centre for Data Management and Visualization (CDMV) is recruiting a student or recent graduate in the field of geographic information systems (GIS) for an internship position (August 2024 to January 2025). The primary responsibilities for this position will be to assist research staff in the development of an ongoing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) web mapping project supporting environmental and cultural sustainability in the Northwest Territories.
The main function of the web mapping application, named the Northern Landscapes Sensitivity Atlas (NLSA), is to present data (e.g. environmental, cultural, regulatory) from multiple authoritative sources in one place, breaking down institutional silos, and facilitating the intersection and analysis of disparate datasets from many organizations. The NLSA aggregates scientific and environmental research as well as traditional Indigenous knowledge, presenting an interactive hub for community-led science.
Critical to this function is the development of a spatial extract, transform, and load (ETL) system that automates the searching and filtering of organizational open datasets, then publishes and updates these data on a scheduled basis. The NLSA is being designed and developed using the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) stack of ArcGIS’ desktop and online software applications and uses a combination of automated and semi-automated programming workflows to retrieve data from a variety of publicly available sources. These spatial ETL tools will be built in the ESRI ArcGIS desktop and online software apps and extension. The project also involves coordination and engagement with our research partner (the Sahtú Renewable Resources Board), and community representatives and knowledge holders from throughout the Sahtú Region of the Northwest Territories.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Strong knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Online software and related tools for data analysis, mapping, and visualization.
Experience with Python and Model Builder.
Proficient in data collection, manipulation, and analysis techniques.
Excellent attention to detail and ability to ensure data accuracy and integrity.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex spatial data.
Good communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present findings and recommendations to diverse audiences.
Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be between the ages of 15-30 (inclusive) at the start of the internship
Must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada[DL1]
Must be enrolled or have completed a mapping technologist or geographic information system technologist program at an accredited institution
Knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Online software is required
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, MS Teams is required
Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).
Remuneration: $22.56 - $26.08 per hour, plus 12% in lieu of stat holiday and vacation pay. (Classification - Research Technologist I)[DL2] [AG3]
This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
Please submit a resume and cover letter to be considered for this opportunity.
