POSITION SUMMARY

Working within Lalme’ Iwesawtexw (Seabird Island Community School) for the school year, The Grade 5 Teacher will be responsible for providing instruction, preparation, assessment, classroom management, professional development and school meetings, community and parental relations and adherence to all Seabird Island Community School and BC Ministry of Education policies and procedures. You will be a member of an interdisciplinary, collaborative teaching team, liaising with other professionals, students, family members, and community to provide students with holistic, culturally focused education.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education
  • Current practicing British Columbia (BC) Certified Teacher qualifications

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in addressing a wide range of academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of children of intermediate ages.
  • Excellent classroom management, behavioral management, and organizational skills.
  • Training and experience in successfully using a variety of resources to teach students.
  • Maintains and promotes working relationships with community professionals.
  • Participates in the ongoing planning, development, and extension of services.
  • Collaborating with teachers to develop more effective strategies to work with special needs students.
  • Willingness to contribute to a positive school culture by volunteering in extracurricular activities.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Proficient computer skills with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams.)
  • Proficient interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Ability to agree as well as adhere to Seabird Island Band Human Resources (HR), Finance, and Information Technology (IT) Policies and Procedures, etc.
  • Knowledge, respect and understanding of Stó:lō culture, traditions and language or willingness to learn.
  • Experience working with First Nations community is an asset.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License with a clean Driver’s Abstract within the last 5 years.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (CRRP)

Responsibilities:

  • Instruction and delivery of curriculum in keeping with the BC Ministry of Education Integrated Resource Packages, outlines and prescribed learning outcomes or as outlined by school administration.
  • Deliver all lessons with high expectations for all learners.
  • Meeting all reporting and assessing deadlines
  • Preparation for School wide assessments: i.e., CAT 4.
  • Lesson preparation, year plan preparation.
  • Taking and reporting attendance of students.
  • Development of Individual Education Plans with special education teacher and carrying out instruction of Individual Education Plans with required adaptations and modifications.
  • Implement trauma informed practices and strategies in the classroom and school.
  • Undertake effective classroom management strategies.
  • Participation in initiatives to improve student attendance.
  • Maintaining daily books and lesson plans as required by administration.
  • Participating actively in teacher evaluations and acting on areas for improvement or professional development.
  • Participation in initiatives to ensure individual students have participated in mandatory schoolwork catch-up sessions.
  • Participation in PLC’s when space/opportunity permits.
  • Participation in video coaching and preparing for teleconferences by reviewing the video and discussing areas of effectiveness and improvements.
  • Preparation of report cards and progress reports.
  • Referring attendance and behavior concerns to administration.
  • Implement a home reading program that encourages reading at home for enjoyment.
  • Mandatory attendance at staff meetings.
  • Mandatory participation in professional development days and activities.
  • Be present at school events.
  • On-going correspondence with parents.
  • Problem solving any issues with students or parents.
  • Meetings with administration as required to address any emerging issues.
  • Abiding by all policies of Seabird Island Community School, the BC Ministry of Education, Independent Schools Branch and Seabird Island Band.
  • Ensuring compliance with the Seabird Island Community School Teacher Code of Conduct
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by the Vice Principal, Principal, Director or the Executive Director.
