Job description
We seek to appoint a graduate to be an Assistant Teacher of Computer Science from September 2024. This envisaged as a full-time post for a year or two before progressing into a teaching post at King’s or elsewhere and a superb opportunity to join a thriving academic and all-round school with a strong technological side. Formal teacher training with QTS may be available in the second year of appointment.
Accommodation may be available near the school for up to two years.
The Computer Science department at King’s is gradually expanding and increasing in popularity as a subject choice at GCSE and A Level.
There will be teaching in the Computer Science department and we are open to the possibility of offering some teaching in another department depending on qualifications and interest.
There is some programming to be taught in the King’s compulsory Year 9 course, ‘Digital Curriculum’. The middle school (Years 10-11) study towards CIE 0478 (9-1) IGCSE Computer Science. There are currently two classes in each of these years of up to 17 pupils.
In the Sixth Form students work towards the CIE A level in Computer Science (9608). At GCSE level students currently program in Python and at A Level students program in Java with some work in Android Studio. Applicants must be able to program to A Level standard (object-orientated programming); some experience of programming GUIs is desirable but not essential. Guidance will be provided to develop programming skills.
In addition to academic excellence, the school seeks to promote excellence in all its varied co-curricular pursuits. Teachers at King’s are expected to be fully involved in some capacity in this programme; for this role there is the possibility of teaching and supporting just Computer Science or being involved in other subject areas as well, according to interest and qualifications.
There is also the expectation to contribute to other areas of school life, possibly through taking on a tutor group and duties in one of the boarding or day houses, and/or coaching sport, contributing to drama, music, debating or the Activities programme.
No experience of teaching is expected for this role; support and training is provided; some classes would be team-taught and some solo responsibility. Those finishing university courses are welcome to apply as well as those making a move from other careers.
