Description:

Due to the generosity of Dr Grant Gibson, former research student in corrosion protection at Manchester, and Founder and Chair of Gate Energy, applications are invited for a 5-year Fellowship in “Corrosion Futures”. This unrivalled opportunity offers candidates the chance to develop their own independent research vision focussed on mechanistic understanding of corrosion processes and in corrosion control methods relevant to delivering future net zero processes and the sustainable use of engineering materials. This is a full-time position, although flexible working applications will also be considered. It is based at Manchester but may include UK (& international) travel requirements.
The role will augment the extensive research activities of the Corrosion group, which currently spans areas such as net-zero and carbon storage, environmental biotechnology, metallurgy, and sustainable materials. Key emphases include hydrogen/materials interactions within the hydrogen economy and safeguarding renewable systems, including new nuclear technologies and renewable energy systems. The appointee is also expected to remain attuned to emerging sectors, such as knowledge transfer from offshore engineering to renewable structures, in alignment with the overall university strategy. To meet expectations, the role necessitates securing research funding, supervising postgraduate and post-doctoral researchers, delivering timely presentations and publications with protection of intellectual property, and engaging in/initiating relevant collaborations.
The Fellowship is for Early Career Researchers (ECR). Applicants are expected to hold a PhD by the start date of the Fellowship or have equivalent research experience. There are no eligibility rules based on years of post-doctoral experience or whether the applicant holds a permanent academic position. The ethos of the Early Career Researcher scheme is to support candidates who have a track record of outstanding research and in delivering impact. Consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a non-standard career path after their primary degree and circumstances such as maternity, paternity, long term illness, caring responsibilities or career breaks. Applications are also welcome from candidates who wish to re-establish themselves after a career break or other period of absence from active research. There are no nationality restrictions.
The Department of Materials is committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN charter for promoting women’s careers in STEMM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) in higher education. The Department received a Silver Award in 2017 for their commitment to the representation of women in the workplace and we particularly welcome applications from women for this post. Appointment will always be made on merit. For further information, please visit http://www.materials.manchester.ac.uk/about-us/athena-swan/
