Description:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma and enrolled in post-secondary education in agriculture/similar discipline or an acceptable combination of education, training, and experience
  • Experience operating tractors and other types of farm equipment
  • Ability to have a flexible work schedule, as job may include some weekend and evening work
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Mechanical knowledge to be able to assist in the repair and maintenance of equipment
  • Willing to work outside in varying conditions
  • Able to do physical labor, such as lifting and landscaping
  • Eye for detail and good note-taking ability

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Farm background
  • Experience with irrigation equipment
  • Valid Class 3 driver’s license
  • Experience in research and plot work

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the setup, irrigation and data collection of research plots as required.
  • Setting up and operating the irrigation systems for the corner plot areas, recording amounts of water applied, times and dates for entry into farm database.
  • Irrigate and maintain lawn and trees around shop and landscape demonstration area.
  • Apply herbicides as needed under the supervision of the senior technologist.
  • Assist with field operations such as cultivating, seeding, disking, swathing and harvesting of crops.
  • Control weeds around buildings, storage areas, and in fields by weed whipping, spraying, and mowing.
  • Keep grass mowed along roadways, fence lines, buildings, and other infrastructure.
  • Help maintain the perimeter of plots and fields by mowing, cultivating or other appropriate means.
  • Help maintain and operate the Demo Canal and associated equipment.
  • Assist with soil moisture surveys and neutron probe measurements for irrigation recommendations (training / certification provided).
  • Assist research technician with trouble shooting of research equipment
  • Assist with equipment repairs and keep equipment in good operating condition.
  • Keep shop and storage building clean and organized so work can be carried out in a safe manner.
