Description:

OVERVIEW:

We are seeking a senior engineer/scientist to lead the world class capabilities of the Extreme Environment Materials Process (EEMP) Group. The EEMP group manufactures, develops, and deploys composite materials operating in harsh environments. The group’s focus is on advancing the science and technology of polymeric, ceramic and carbon-carbon composites. Research areas span material formulation, fiber and preform manufacture, densification and additive manufacturing for energy applications and thermal protection systems. This position is within the Composites Science and Technology (CST) Section of the Manufacturing Science Division (MSD), which houses the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and Carbon Fiber Technology Facility.
Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Requires a Ph.D. with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience, a M.S. with a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience or a B.S. with 15 years of relevant experience.
  • Qualified candidates should have demonstrated experience in leading R&D teams
  • Proven ability to engage in a wide variety of R&D efforts
  • Proven ability to secure funding for R&D efforts
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven ability to publish research results in peer reviewed jurnal articles
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.

  • Experience with additive manufacturing
  • Experience with densification techniques
  • Experience with characterization techniques relevant to polymer and ceramic materials
  • Proven ability to scale-up technologies

The R&D Group Leader brings together a group of peers with the primary goal of pursuing global scientific leadership in their field, nurtures ORNL’s culture among group members, and continues to build and scale up individual excellence and impact in R&D. The R&D Group Leader reports to and works closely with the R&D Section Head to implement the group’s scientific vision; develops group members to enable their career advancement; establishes capabilities that enable programs to excel at the forefront of science and technology; performs R&D to advance the field of knowledge and/or technology in one’s respective specialty; sets, implements, and models standards for performance of work consistent with Environment, Safety, Security, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements and business rules; and ensures a diverse and inclusive work environment where every employee feels safe, heard, and appreciated—a workplace that sets an example for the broader community.
