Description:

Patient CareProvide specialist nursing expertise, ensuring all staff are supported in theirpractice on day to day and ongoing basis. To ensure the assessment, development and evaluation of programmes of care in order to co-ordinate the holistic needs of women. Uses advanced decision making skills to utilise all available resources to deliver nursing care effectively and efficiently in a timely manner.To take measures to ensure the safety of women, which includes delegation of patient care to nurses and/or support staff with the appropriate levels of skills at all times, making adjustments as workload and caseload alters, using developed decision making skills.To report any incidents/accidents to the matron, completing Datix whenappropriate Lead and/or assist in investigation of complaints and implement recommendations arising from these investigations.To facilitate research based practice within the department and ensureappropriate implementation. To ensure that Nursing and Clinical Pathways/Guidelines/Protocols are implemented and maintained.To ensure good standards of practice in the department, through participation in effective quality assurance measures such as clinical audit programmes.
Audit and evaluate the emergency gynaecology service in order to developstaff and practice. To manage and effectively support patients through the delivery of difficult news, e.g. diagnosis of miscarriage, termination or ectopic pregnancy. Provide care to bereaved patients and their relatives introducing the bereavement team for specialised care and follow up.
Communicate effectively with multi-disciplinary professionals and agencies, ensuring seamless care at a high standard.Produce patient information , ensuring it is updated to reflect current research based practice. To engage with service users, ensuring feedback is actively shared and supports developments within the service.Work two clinical shifts per week in the clinical area and provide supportwhere necessary where staffing limits fall short of the required limitsManagement and ensure that duty rotas for the staff will provide effective and well balanced cover to meet with the requirements of the service and ensure the presence of suitably qualified and experienced nurses and support staff at all times.Develop new ways of working if workload requires this.To liaise with other ward/department managers and Lead Sonographer within the Directorate as necessary, to ensure workload and skill mix are effectively managed. Inform and discuss with Matron any problems highlighted.Participate in audit programmes and present results.Respond appropriately to incidents reported via the Datix system andinvestigations with monitoring of action plansTo develop and embed evidence based care ensuring national guidance isimplemented.Communicate complex and sensitive patient and staff information facilitating good working relationships. Ensure all resources are used to the optimum and manage the departmentsbudget.
To ensure all staff are conversant and comply with Trust policies and regulations and attend mandatory updates as instructed.To monitor the safe and effective use of all equipment and the economic use of supplies and ordering equipment replacement, together with maintenance of that equipment.To maintain accurate management records relating to all aspects ofdepartment management.To lead, motivate and develop staff to provide high standards of nursing care and be responsible for the management of Health & Safety matters, identifying that their work areas comply with all Health & Safety regulations. To carry out annual Personal Development Reviews of staff within the unit.To have knowledge and ability to appropriately escalate to matron ensuringsafe practice and care at all times. To provide support to medical staff who are working in the department Education & Training To be a senior supervisor and assessor and preceptor to junior nurses andstudent nurses, working closely with education providers.To ensure staff are able to reach their full potential by enabling them todevelop professional, clinical, managerial and communication skills, which will be identified through the use of appraisals and effective communication skills.To plan and participate in the teaching programmes of students, workingclosely with the Universities.To develop the nursing role within the area, providing training andassessment to extend clinical skills, as appropriate to the area.To identify areas for development of skills in line with the local and nationalguidance. To monitor and effectively manage all staff compliance within ESR for theirstatutory and mandatory training.
ProfessionalTo take all measures to ensure safety and report all accidents/incidents to the Matron and to monitor the safe and effective use of all equipment and the economic use of supplies.Maintain accurate management records at all times, ensuring appropriatereporting mechanisms are used.To maintain a professional attitude at all times, developing the role of thenurse in the best interest of the patient and profession in accordance with the NMC documents.To promote a positive attitude for the profession and the Trust within which you are working.To be aware of personal and professional development. To attend coursesand conferences as recommended and approved by the matron.To co-ordinate the development and implementation of the policies andprotocols with particular emphasis on those that relate to gynaecology. To be conversant and comply with the gynaecology services guidelines and attend mandatory updates as instructed. Participate in research projects where appropriate, reporting findings within a multi-disciplinary framework and Implement research where appropriate.To be professionally accountable for ones own nursing practice, acting in aprofessional manner at all times abiding by the Code of Conduct and all other relevant NMC and Trust practice protocols and guidelines.To be responsible for the maintenance and improvement of own professional knowledge and competence in keeping with the practice and CPD standard laid down by the NMC to ensure continued professional registration.PersonnelTo participate in the selection, interviewing and induction of new members of staff.
To be involved in manpower requirements in line with identified service developments, making recommendations on improvements in service as appropriate.To be responsible for the maintenance of day to day discipline within theward/department and to undertake, where necessary, initiation of thedisciplinary procedure.To counsel staff in relation to professional and personal matters including the management of sickness absence.To manage hazards/unsafe practices and ensure all accidents/untowardincidents are recorded in accordance with the laid down procedures,escalating to Matron/Operational Manager when required.Monitor staff performance with mandatory training. Organise staff appraisals, ensuring that developmental needs are linked to the maternity training plan
