Description:

The YMCA of Northern Alberta is looking for an Aquatics Head Guard to create a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while providing effective supervision and risk management to the overall delivery of all aquatic’s programs. This role is working on strategies to improve the members’ experience, affecting an increase in retention, program quality and overall member satisfaction in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

With this role, there is the additional opportunity to perform one-on-one and group personal training sessions for patrons provided that an approved personal training certification is held by the candidate.

Responsibilities:

  • Support aquatics supervisor in recruiting, hiring, training, and coaching.
  • Develop and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members, program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.
  • Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers program participants and families to other programs.
  • Aware of all emergency procedures, pool standards and best practices; responds to situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures; completes related reports or recommendations as required.
  • Ensure YMCA Aquatics SAM standards are consistently met or exceeded and supports the supervisor in responding to service issues with possible solutions in a timely manner.
  • Work as an active on-deck mentor, lifeguard and swim instructor.
  • On deck evaluation of lifeguards to ensure scanning, guarding and patrol pattern standards are met.
  • Audits aquatics facilities, and all equipment (emergency, safety, program), on a regular basis ensuring standards are met and resolving deficiencies and issues.
  • Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the Alberta health code. Specifically, but not limited to daily water tests, pool attendance tracking and staff certifications.
  • Ensures aquatics facility is safe by conducting audits, reviewing emergency checklists, performing health & safety checks, and daily walk arounds are being completed and action is taken to correct unsafe or high-risk areas.
  • Continual on-deck and in-water coaching and training of swim instructor staff to meet scanning, health &safety, opportunities for growth, program quality improvement and YMCA Aquatics SAM standards.
  • Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
