POSITION SUMMARY:

The Head of International Strategy & Europe Communications plays a pivotal role in shaping the company’s global presence. This position involves steering the Corporate Affairs strategy across international markets, crafting a cohesive global communications plan, developing a government affairs strategy, and aligning advocacy efforts worldwide.
Additionally, the role demands the creation and implementation of a comprehensive communications plan for Europe, ensuring it supports the overarching goals of the worldwide Corporate Affairs team and drives the regional business objectives forward. This strategic leadership position reports directly to the Global Vice President of Commercialization & Market Communications.
The position partners closely with global leaders from Corporate Affairs and the Commercial organization; and oversees above-market and in-market work. The role has a line management responsibility for a team of country/cluster Corporate Affairs leads across markets in the Europe (Spain/Portugal, UK/Ireland, EU Cluster, CEETII Cluster, France, Italy, Germany.

Requirements:

  • 15+ years of experience in Corporate Affairs, preferably in the pharmaceutical industry and in the European Region.
  • Proven track record for sharp strategic analysis, including incorporating communications, policy and public affairs components into the strategic analyses that drive business decisions and growth.
  • Deep understanding of international medical affairs and proven track record supporting strategy for medical communications.
  • Deep understanding of access and policy environment across geographies along with existing relationships with top business, consumer and financial media globally.
  • Substantial experience in managing culturally diverse, virtual teams across the matrix
  • Proven track record working with access and policy leaders. In addition to working in a cross functional manner with advocacy and gov’t affairs.
  • Experience with targeted stakeholders is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to influence at the senior level.
  • Ability to manage roles with significant breadth and complexity.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field. Master’s degree preferred

Responsibilities:

International Strategy

  • Develop the integrated communications strategy across International Markets and in partnership with global Corporate Affairs leaders. Strategy components include media relations, brand and corporate communications, employee engagement, corporate reputation, issue management, digital and social media, and patient engagement (mostly within local market work).
  • Build and strengthen the government affairs and patient advocacy capability across the world in partnership with Global Corporate Affairs teams.
  • Build and leverage strong networks with external stakeholders including media contacts to help support delivery of BMS work.
  • Lead the strategy of the worldwide internal communications and employee engagement strategy by proactively driving ideas and programs that support culture evolution and an engaged workforce in partnership with HR and other functions.
  • Oversees the execution of thought leadership programs for Commercial Leaders in alignment with plans for other Global Leadership Team members.
  • Develop and execute corporate reputation strategies, including branding, digital, and reputation assessment and tracking.
  • Lead the above-market implementation of the Corporate Reputation and Corporate Affairs Plan.

European Region

  • Develop and guide the overall communication strategy for the European region, including external and internal communications to engage and inspire employees as well as thought leadership communications, for SVP, Head of European Markets, and the European Leadership Team.
  • Lead a team of communications professionals and work closely with the SVP, Head of European Markets, and the European Leadership Team to oversee the execution of the integrated internal and external communications strategy across the European region.
  • Deliver appropriate communications strategies to maximize communications opportunities and mitigate relevant risks to the company and its assets by anticipating and preparing for stakeholder reactions to relevant corporate, brand, regulatory and data milestones.
  • Develop and implement communications strategies for Europe that align with government affairs needs, especially in regard to European Union related matters
  • Develop and execute mutually beneficial, regional initiatives with patient organizations and patient opinion leaders
  • Build and strengthen the patient advocacy capability across the region in partnership with Global Advocacy Corporate Affairs teams
  • Build and leverage strong network with external stakeholders including media contacts in the region to help support delivery of BMS work
  • Develop and execute corporate reputation strategies at region level, including branding, digital and reputation assessment and tracking
  • Manage multiple external providers/agency support for best outcomes, in alignment with Sourcing Policies
