The Role: Head of Legal, APAC
Role Summary
S&P Global Commodity Insights (“SPGCI”) is seeking a dynamic commercially-minded lawyer based in APAC to head its APAC Legal team. This role reports to the General Counsel of the division, and is a varied and interesting role which includes managing a team of lawyers who support the Commodity Insights business.
Key Responsibilities
Providing guidance and supervision to the APAC legal team in negotiating, drafting and advising on commercial contracts and documents, including service agreements, distribution agreements, customer contracts, vendor contracts, consultancy agreements and marketing agreements.
Advising the business on important legal issues facing the SPGCI business, including antitrust, employment, privacy, intellectual property, and media law.
Advising the business on emerging legal and regulatory risks in APAC.
Providing guidance and supervision to the APAC legal team as they work with internal and external clients in the contract negotiation process, including ensuring that sales and the business comply with laws, company processes and guidelines.
Working closely with senior Commodity Insights stakeholders and other members of the Commodity Insights Global Legal Leadership Team to address legal or strategic issues.
Delivering legal and best practices training to the business.
Engaging in discussions with APAC regulators as needed and providing legal advice on regulatory issues.
Managing outside counsel as appropriate.
Working with S&P Global’s Legal Department Centers of Excellence on a variety of legal matters concerning the SPGCI business.
Advising the product development team on legal issues relating to new product offerings and provide ongoing legal support with regard to existing products and product modifications.
Advising on corporate matters relating to SPGCI’s legal entities, such as corporate re-organisations and intercompany arrangements.
Inspire, encourage and strengthen the APAC legal team and build up each team member to be the best they can be.
Required Skill & Experience
Education: Law degree. Qualified as a lawyer in a common law jurisdiction (eg. Singapore, Australia, England & Wales).
Years of experience: At least 15 years of PQE within initial years of experience at a major law firm, followed by in-house experience practicing commercial law.
Strong interpersonal, organisational, verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain complex issues in a simple and commercial manner.
Meticulous with excellent legal drafting skills.
Possesses sound legal knowledge and understanding.
Has worked regularly with regional business executives and senior management.
Has experience in managing a team.
Pro-active and has the ability to think logically outside the box in order to provide practical win-win solutions to the business which effectively protects SPGCI’s legal interests.
Ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks, and work to tight deadlines.
Team leader and team player who acts in the best interests of the Company and the Legal team, and who is able to guide and grow the APAC legal team members.
Experience in antitrust, employment, privacy, intellectual property and/or media law is a bonus.
Interaction
Partner with senior business stakeholders to provide best-in-class legal support to SPGCI.
Partner with S&P Global’s Legal Department Centers of Excellence as needed (e.g., employment, M&A, litigation, corporate secretarial).
Partner with SPGCI’s Compliance and Risk Teams as necessary.
