Job Description
The Position
The Director, Health and Safety serves as a key member of the global Health, Safety and Environment team and the Australian Leadership team, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, Australia. This position will collaborate closely with global health and safety leaders and the Australian Leadership Team to ensure achievement of Albemarle’s strategic initiatives within Australia.
This role will oversee and effectively lead the Heath and Safety function for Albemarle Australia to provide expert advice, guidance and solutions to the business. The incumbent will pro-actively drive the Health and Safety strategy and performance for Australia ensuring global and local alignment across all Australian divisions including Manufacturing, Mining and Resources, Capital Projects, and Corporate. The role will be ultimately responsible for cultivating and fostering Australia’s Health and Safety performance culture which enhances safety, knowledge skills and engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cultivate a Health and Safety (H&S) culture that enhances safety, knowledge, and skills and makes safety every person’s number 1 priority.
  • Health and Safety oversight for all activities at all applicable Albemarle operated sites within Australia.
  • Provide effective leadership, strategic direction, and oversight to the Health and Safety teams across the Australia region.
  • Liaise with all Australian sites/projects to provide first point of contact on H&S related matters.
  • Train, coach and mentor leaders and health and safety professionals.
  • Working within corporate strategies and policy frameworks set by the organisation, design, propose and implement H&S strategies, guidelines, and procedures to meet requirements for manufacturing needs.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Albemarle Australia’s Safety and Health management system in alignment with organisational objectives.
  • Drive established corporate initiatives and H&S action plans.
  • Conduct site visits to assist with in-the-field support of various activities and program implementations.
  • Coordinate and assist in the response to significant events including root cause investigations and the development of corrective actions resulting from audits, incident investigations, regulatory inspections, etc.
  • Oversee and lead Health and Safety regulator engagement (including for H&S non-compliances).
  • Stay apprised of emerging H&S issues including legislative, regulatory requirements etc., and communicates accordingly with corporate and business line managers.
  • Establish and drive a robust governance and auditing system to ensure that H&S risks are controlled and gaps are closed. This includes proactive monitoring and tracking of lead and lag indicators and identification of key trends.
  • As a key member of the Corporate HSE team, advise the VP HSE on Australian trends and issues.
  • Timely reporting of regional HSE KPIs.
  • Champion the sharing of best practices and incident lessons learned.
  • Develop programs to target improvement of Contractor H&S performance.
  • Provide Health and Safety input and commentary to senior management, including on data sets received from Albemarle’s non-operated JV assets.

Work Experience / Technical Skill Requirements

  • Minimum 15 years of senior management experience in a similar environment being manufacturing/processing, mining and resources.
  • Experience working at an executive or senior leadership level in HSE; including development and implementation of HSE strategy, board reporting and effectively working as part of a broader cross-functional Leadership team.
  • HSE experience in manufacturing/processing, mining and resources industries and a deep understanding of HSE both at site and corporate level.
  • Demonstrated extensive experience in leading field operational HSE teams.
  • Subject matter expert in HSE compliance.
  • Strong influencing and communications skills.
  • Proven business acumen and strategic thinking.
  • Effective leadership and mentoring skill, ability to motivate teams and individuals.
  • Outcome focused.
  • Demonstrated experience in influencing and negotiation.
  • Ability to operate within a dynamic and diverse environment and has a ‘hands on’ approach.

  • Bachelor qualification in a relevant field.
