The Shaw Group is looking to add a Health and Safety Officer to our team, the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring knowledge of and continued compliance with the Health & Safety management systems for the Shaw Group under the guidance of the VP Health, Safety and Security. S/he is also responsible for promoting all aspects of H&S throughout residential, multi residential construction sites, communicating with trades and sub trades with respect to Health & Safety and providing related support to front line supervisions. The focus of this role is ensuring worksite compliance to legislative and corporate safety rules and promotion of continuous safety improvement to build a culture where everyone goes home safe at the end of the workday.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary education in OH&S
- Construction related technical trade(s) considered an asset.
- Minimum 3-5 years’ experience as an OHS practitioner in a field related position in the construction industry.

- Ability to recognize and resolve issues using conflict resolution skills and techniques.

- A strong background in construction and heavy construction.
- Understanding and ability to interpret provincial OHS Act and Regulations.

Responsibilities:
- Perform daily worksite visits and H&S inspections to ensure compliance and prepare reports to track corrective and preventative actions from inspections.
- Deliver a strong H&S focus/awareness to employees and subcontractors through H&S site visits and inspection activities.
- Provide input into development, implementation, and management of H&S programs.
- Monitor H&S performance and compliance with focus on identifying trends, as well as identifying and implementing best practices in H&S.
- Track the progress of implementation for action items (i.e. Non-conformance, OHS committee actions, Worksite Inspection actions, Corrective/Preventive actions - Post Incident) and monitor effectiveness of actions taken.
- Liaise with subcontractors, attend safety meetings, and deliver safety orientations and presentations.
- Perform audits and prepare reports.
- Perform timely and accurate accident/incident investigations (root cause analysis), and corrective actions plans.
- Facilitate and monitor compliance of H&S related activities (e.g. Pre-Job Risk Assessments, Toolbox Meetings and documentation, hazard analysis, development, and review of JSA’s, SWP etc.….).
- Support supervisors, foreman and front-line employees on H&S requirements with a strong focus on continuous safety improvement.
- Actively participate and help promote effective JOHS committee meetings.
- Lead the development and maintenance of a “Safety First” culture.
- Deliver or arrange for H&S training and assess content of training for effectiveness.
- Deliver Safety Culture messaging through various communication strategies, ie toolboxes, safety bulletins, safety meetings etc.
- Ensure continuous improvement of proactive safety culture through promotion of Hazard ID/Near Miss program and other leading indicator opportunities.
