Te Tūnga Mahi: About the role
Te Tumu Waiora - ‘to head towards wellness’ - is a model of primary mental health care which aims to provide all of our Tāngata Whai Ora experiencing mental distress or addiction challenges with access to convenient, high quality and person-centred care and support. We have the exciting opportunity to find a Mātanga Whakapiki Ora (Health Improvement Practitioner) who brings a Kaupapa Māori approach to their mahi in one of our Kaupapa Māori practices in Waitaha; Whānau Ora Community Clinic - Te Waipounamu. This role is for 20 hours per week.
Te Oranga Hinengaro te pūmanawa o te hauora.
The model puts mental health and wellbeing at the heart of general practice. The Health Improvement Practitioner works as part of the general practice whānau with the aim to increase access to mental health services.
A working knowledge and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application to health care, equity and service delivery
- A relevant registered health professional qualification and full registration without conditions under one of the following: Health Practitioners Competency Assurance (HPCA) Act, DAPAANZ, Social Work Registration Authority (SWRB), or New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) with Te Whatu Ora Accreditation.
- 3+ years of experience working within a counselling/mental health environment (including drug and alcohol support services) delivering talking therapies for example ACT, CBT, FACT
- Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, and an ability to develop relationships with a wide variety of people.
- Experience working autonomously as well as part of a wider team.
- Enthusiasm and passion about improving healthcare for Māori
Responsibilities:
- Working directly with individuals and their families to help improve their mental health and wellbeing.
- Delivering brief, consultation-based services and behavioural interventions to general practice team members and general practice patients for both mental health and physical health conditions.
- Utilising an integrated ‘Stepped Model of Care’ that supports clients’ needs and enables them to move between services in general practice and, if needed, through to the community.
