Job Description
At abrdn, enabling our clients to be better investors drives everything we do.
Through the expertise, insight, and innovation of our team, we aim to help clients create more ways for money to make an impact. We set our sights on giving them more confidence to achieve their goals, and more clarity about what they need next. And we focus on delivering outcomes that are more than just financial – by investing responsibly to build a better world.
I. About the Role
Last year, abrdn acquired 4 closed-end funds from Tekla Capital, welcoming a team with deep specialist knowledge in the Healthcare and Biotech sectors, creating a center of excellence within our business. It will aim to capitalize on future innovations and technological advancements in medical and disease prevention research, to help combat increasing healthcare costs and the impact of our aging population.
As a Healthcare Analyst within our developed market’s thematic group, you will collaborate closely with our investment team. Your responsibilities will span various aspects of security analysis, combining scientific and medical knowledge with financial expertise.

II. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Original Research: Conduct primary research on healthcare (primarily biotechnology and pharmaceuticals) companies, staying abreast of industry developments.
  • Clinical Analysis: Rigorously analyze clinical data, review adjacent medical literature, and attend relevant conferences.
  • Effective Communication: Translate complex medical concepts into clear and concise communication for the team.
  • Industry Insights: Collaborate with industry executives and key opinion leaders to gain valuable insights.
  • Market Assessment: Quantify market opportunities within specific disease areas through detailed market research.
  • Valuation Analysis: Perform valuation assessments, including discounted cash flow analysis, trading comparable analysis, and M&A comparables.
  • Independent Conclusions: Synthesize diverse information (clinical data, biological rationale, market sentiment, and financials) to form independent conclusions about companies.
  • Research Collaboration: Actively work with other abrdn pods to publish and share research with other PMs and teams.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Portfolio Management: Participate in the portfolio management of our various sector strategies.
  • Data Synthesis: Provide clear, concise, and accurate synthesis of preclinical and clinical data, as well as commercial and competitive landscapes, to support investment decision-making.
  • Scientific Monitoring: Evaluate and actively monitor scientific literature, clinical databases, and commercial databases for assigned companies, ensuring the Partner is advised about upcoming datasets and presentations.
  • Engagement: Proactively engage in discussions with subject matter experts and industry participants (companies, funds).

III. Qualifications and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences; graduate degree (MBA, MD or PhD) strongly preferred. Coursework or experience in clinical trial design and statistics is a plus.
  • At least 2 years of buy-side (public equities, private equity, venture capital) and/or sell-side (equity research, banking) experience following the healthcare space (pharmaceutical or biotechnology sector strongly preferred).
  • Relevant corporate/industry experience will also be considered.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain detailed financial models.
  • Outstanding work ethic, attention to detail, and ability to work well in a team.
  • Ability to distill insights from vast sources of information, including research reports, industry news, daily publications, and company press releases.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical thinking skills.
  • Keen to learn, take on new responsibilities, and innovate.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, solid judgment, and the ability to apply critical thinking.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
