Description:

Purpose: The Heavy Equipment Mechanic – Lead will manage activities and personnel engaged in the full range of heavy wheeled equipment maintenance repair; possible deployment may be required to other sites to perform inspections and repairs on equipment that is either being issued out to or returned from using Units; overtime work hours may be required.
Positions Reporting to this Function: Heavy Equipment Mechanics and Senior Heavy Equipment Mechanics

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to fulfill each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Leads approximately 12 to 20 mechanics in either the TDA, Light, Medium, or Heavy Wheels shops.
  • Diagnoses system malfunctions, isolate causes, and correct deficiencies for the following types of military heavy equipment: PLS (M1120A4 M1075,) LHS (M1074’s). HEMMTs (M984A4, M978A4, Etc.) FMTVs (M1078-M1089A1P2) STRYKERs, (JLTV’s (1278, 1280A1) and Trailers for equipment i.e.; M1076. M1082, M1095, M870 series to include Flat racks.
  • Dismantles and reassembles equipment, using Technical Manuals (TM).
  • Performs annual service on equipment fleet.
  • Performs a full range of overhaul, repair, and service on all Heavy Wheeled equipment maintenance at the Field and Sustainment level of Maintenance.
  • Inspects, repairs, and replaces components, engines, transmissions, and sub-assemblies.
  • Identifies parts in repair manuals and places order request for needed parts.
  • Performs maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs on various pieces of wheeled equipment including but not limited to military and civilian engineer equipment.
  • Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.
  • Able to read and understand Hydraulic and Electric diagrams and schematics.
  • Has experience in hydraulic hose fabrication.
  • Can mentor and teach subordinate mechanic to improve technical ability
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain a daily timesheet and daily manning report and ensuring times are accurate.
  • All APS-2 contractor mechanics are expected to provide their own basic mechanics tool set.

Qualification & Experience Requirements: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • 5+ years’ experience as a heavy equipment mechanic is required.
  • 1-3 years’ leadership experience required.
  • Military experience is preferred
  • ASE certification preferred or other Civilian training or certificates
  • Must be able to meet and maintain all base access security requirements.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a US Passport

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English.
  • Must have the ability to analyze and interpret U.S. Army Technical Manuals with relation to vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of GCCS-A, FEDLOG and office program is plus.
  • Will be required to obtain a military driver’s license (OF 346).
