Description:

The West Virginia Clinical & Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI) at West Virginia University Research Corporation is seeking applications for a (Hybrid) Junior Data Scientist.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in machine learning, computer science, or related field preferred.
  • Experience developing and deploying AI/ML models in practice.
  • Experience with deep learning packages (PyTorch, Tensorflow).
  • Demonstrated experience with electronic health records data.
  • Published peer-reviewed research papers in related field.
  • Knowledge of image processing algorithms.
  • Expertise in SQL.
  • Familiarity with WVCTSI.

    The WVURC was created as a not-for-profit corporation in 1985 to support research (R1) at West Virginia University. We provide evaluation, development, patenting, management, and marketing services for inventions of the faculty, staff and students of the University.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in machine learning, computer science, statistics, or other related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience with data science applications.
  • Expertise in developing predictive models.
  • Expertise in Python libraries or data science R packages is required.
  • Expertise in data analytic programming and scripting.
  • Ability to demonstrate expertise in querying and cleansing large datasets.
  • Ability to create abstracts, posters, presentations, manuscripts, and other forms of disseminating research results.
  • Knowledge of database management systems (SQL preferred)
  • Expertise in at least one data visualization software (Tableau, PowerBI, Qlik, Shiny) or data science code base equivalents (R, Python, Julia, etc).
  • Must be able to perform in an independent manner with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to present and explain complex findings at various technical and non-technical levels of the organization.
  • Must have strong analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Must have effective time management skills at meeting deadlines.
  • Must be able to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Must be able to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Must have knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar, and the ability to communicate clearly.
  • Must maintains skills in, or knowledge of, professional principles, legal and/or reporting requirements affecting area of responsibility.
  • Must be able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development, evaluation, and deployment of ML and AL algorithms for different projects.
  • Collaborate with Senior Data Scientist to apply creative and strategic thinking to identify problems, solutions, and potential alternative approaches.
  • Write code in Python and/or R, interpreting and reporting results.
  • Prepare journal manuscripts.
  • Contribute to the design of research.
  • Participate in multiple complex projects simultaneously.
