ABOUT THE TEAM/JOB
EMBL is Europe’s life sciences laboratory – an intergovernmental organisation with more than 110 independent research groups and service teams covering the spectrum of molecular biology. It operates across six sites in Heidelberg (headquarters), Barcelona, Cambridge, Grenoble, Hamburg and Rome. Our mission is to perform basic research in molecular biology; train scientists, students and visitors at all levels; offer vital services to scientists in the public and private sectors within the member states; develop new instruments and methods; and engage actively in technology transfer.
EMBL is looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientific illustrator with a background in graphic design. Experience in medical illustration or any visual scientific communication is advantageous. You will be responsible for creating inviting and inspirational visuals that spread life science knowledge both within the molecular biology community, and to the wider public. You have the scientific knowledge to grasp complex information, distil it down and illustrate the story in a clear visual narrative that is accurate, educational and engaging.
As part of the Creative Team, you will work closely with EMBL scientists and EMBL’s Communications team. Your output will include visual content for presentations, magazines, campaigns, film, web, interactive and mobile media, virtual reality and exhibits.

Responsibilities:
YOUR ROLE
What you will do:
- Illustrations for news articles and publications and various other formats like videos and embl.org
- Create inspirational compositions to support EMBL’s corporate visual language
- Design accurate charts and graphs from data
- Animate 3D visuals and 2D graphics
- Collaborate with various stakeholders to support targeted communications and design solutions
- Incorporate UI/UX best practices in website design and layout, and adapt designs for different formats and various audiences
- Contribute ideas to campaigns for social media, internal communications and outreach activities
