Description:
POSITION SUMMARY
The successful candidate will be tasked with developing and finishing the content, activities, engagements, and resources for creation of online modules that can be utilized by college departments. The modules will explore local First Nation histories, culture, language, impacts of colonization, and current context of the NIC service regions. The position will require extensive collaboration with the Indigenous Education Facilitator, NIC Elders in Residence, and community knowledge keepers to develop the content for the online modules.
The modules will explore the pre-colonial history, language and culture, specific impacts of colonization, local examples of resilience, and the current day context of the following Nations and Peoples:
- K’ómoks First Nation
- Ligwilda’xw
- Kwakiutl and Kwakwaka’wakw
- Tseshaht, Hupačasath and Nuu-chah-nulth Nations
The modules will also include activities to encourage learners to explore their roles and commitments to support Indigenization and reconciliation.
Curriculum developer requires the following competencies for successful performance of the duties and responsibilities:
- Competencies in all facets of developing new course components including activities, engagements, communications, resources, and content organization in an online or digital environment.
- Demonstrates leadership skills and abilities including the ability to independently lead projects, manage progress, produce summary reports.
- Able to foster a collegial and positive, work environment.
- Demonstrates effective communication and organizational skills including strong interpersonal effectiveness.
- Able to create a positive climate and culture of learning.
- Able to approach the course design from a non-colonial perspective.
- Able to work very closely with scholars, Elders, and First Nation communities.
- Demonstrates a comprehensive background and understanding of local Indigenous ways of knowing and being and application of Indigenous pedagogy.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Able to plan, design and develop the digital course by December 20, 2024
- Background and understanding of local First Nations in the NIC service region, including: culture, language, history, protocols, and current-day context.
- Proficiency with computer applications, digital platforms and word processing.
- Proven digital instructional abilities, using creative and motivating approaches to stimulate learning;
- Able to successfully present content and course design in a digital format
- Skills in organization of work, planning, project management, time management and resourcing
- Able to work flexibly, independently, and successfully in a team structure
- Able to apply universal design principles, metacognitive learning strategies and understanding of how we learn to supporting the development of learning experiences
- Able to thoughtfully and appropriately embed Indigenous perspectives into course design
- Able to reason analytically and problem-solve independently
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Excellent presentation, consultation, and small and large group change management-focused facilitation skills
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in developing Indigenous online curriculum
- Minimum 2 years’ experience teaching Indigenous courses at the post-secondary level
- Preference will be given to qualified candidates of Indigenous ancestry.
- Certificate or Diploma in a relevant discipline
Responsibilities:
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Create content for local First Nations digital core-competency modules sewing together content, components, perspectives, and learning experiences from variety of content experts.
- Create web-ready content including videos, presentations, resources and handouts to support participants’ learning.
- Work collaboratively throughout the whole process with the Indigenous Education Facilitator, First Nations’ Elders and knowledge keepers to build the course, revise components, and enhance areas based on feedback.
