ABOUT US

The Office of Indigenous Initiatives is responsible for championing and/or supporting through advice and counsel Indigenous initiatives across a broad range of areas including student affairs, academic programs, workforce planning, space planning, policy and implementation, and training and development etc… Through collaborative and community-engaged processes, the Office will facilitate partnerships that increase Indigenous voices and presence across all levels of work, study and research at Western.

Within this Office, the Indigenous Student Centre unit is organizationally housed, and offers culturally relevant wholistic and strength-based programs and services geared toward Indigenous students at Western.

QUALIFICATIONS

a. Education

  • Available to a current undergraduate or graduate student of Western University.

b. Experience

  • Previous work experience with in ISC is preferred.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • This role will be flexible in its responsibility dependent on the programming needs of ISC, but the following details an overview of the potential expectation:
  • Administrative support: ordering supplies/groceries, paying bills, requesting petty cash reimbursement, compiling data, filing, answering the main reception phone, greeting and directing students who have questions when they enter the space.
  • Communications support, updating social media and website platforms
  • Centre maintenance; cleaning countertops, floors, dusting, bulletin board, calendar, printer, storage space,
  • Acting as a peer support to students; troubleshooting problems and helping them find information on campus, introducing students to one another (this means that it is important to learn the students’ names), helping students register (self-identifying/user agreement)

Responsibilities:

The Indigenous Student Centre works towards fostering a thriving student environment, to inspire Indigenous students at Western to realize their full potential through a culturally relevant space, services and advocacy that encourage wholistic and strength-based approaches to learning. Student staff are critical in fulfilling the goals of the Indigenous Student Centre Staff. It is an opportunity for students to gain valuable professional experience. The Indigenous Student Centre (ISC) Administrative Assistant is an integral support to the staff of ISC with special attention and reporting to the Student Opportunities Coordinator and the Community Enhancement Coordinator. This role is responsible for onsite reception support of the ISC, as well as programming support across roles as best determined by supervisors. This role needs a consistent schedule and the ability to work up to 24 hours per week.
