DESCRIPTION:

The Indigenous Student Navigator is the main point of contact for Indigenous students, who will provide wrap-around support within the post-secondary learning environment to enable a positive outcome and success.
In this role, you will be responsible for acting as the bridge between Indigenous students and the college support staff, maintaining up-to-date information about programs and educational services available at Northern Lights College. You would be expected to communicate this information to Indigenous students and their sponsors and ensure that the Indigenous students have access to these services. As the bridge for our students to the Learning Support/Access Services, the Indigenous Student Navigator will act as an advocate for students experiencing any learning challenges and will also provide Indigenous students with an awareness of tutoring available and assist them in accessing tutoring services.
The Indigenous Student Navigator will work with the Financial Aid Officers and the Northern Lights College Foundation to assist Indigenous students in their search for pertinent information and literature regarding sources of financial assistance. They will be responsible for distributing this information and these opportunities to NLC’s Indigenous students in an appropriate manner and will provide awareness of internal NLC bursaries and scholarships for Indigenous students as well as possible external financial supports available through outside agencies, companies, or funders (such as assisting students in accessing Band funding, Metis funding, or other sources of Indigenous funding and assistance).

QUALIFICATIONS:

In order to be considered for this position, you will have a two year diploma or bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (Indigenous Studies, Social Work, etc.), with an additional 1 - 2 years of related experience in an education or training setting, with preference being given to those whose experience is within an Indigenous community or an Indigenous education setting (an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered). You must have an advanced knowledge of Indigenous Peoples and Culture.
The successful candidate will be a student-centered individual, who has an extensive understanding of Indigenous student experiences and educational challenges and be able to promote leadership and mentorship to the Indigenous student body through promotion of opportunities.
As with all of our positions at Northern Lights College, you must be able to maintain a high standard of work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to contribute collaboratively to the team. A current, valid driver’s license is required.
To support employment equity and diversity in the workplace, we encourage all qualified applicants, including Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, women, persons of diverse sexual orientation, gender identity or expression (LGBTQ2S+), and others who may contribute to diversity at Northern Lights College.
In the spirit of reconciliation, we are committed to increasing Indigenous Peoples’ representation throughout the institution and encourage applicants to self-identify as Indigenous-First Nation, Metis, or Inuit within cover letters and/or resume.
