The Opportunity
Reporting to the Team Lead, Health & Safety Strategy, Culture, and Governance – the Industrial Hygiene Technical Authority (TA) is a senior-level SME that works with peers, stakeholders, and management to build long-range strategies around Industrial Hygiene and establish, implement, and maintain practices, programs, and standards that enable the Organization to achieve these strategies. The position is located in Calgary, AB or Houston, TX.
The Industrial Hygiene TA is an integral part of TC Energy’s Health and Safety Team, providing independent oversight and expertise in support of operational and construction activities located in Canada, USA, and Mexico. The IH TA supports decisions that are well-informed and aligned with safety, reliability, and operational excellence. The Technical Authority serves as a critical check-and-balance within the organization, collaborating with our counterparts in the field to achieve success through different yet complementary perspectives.

What you’ll do

  • Provide an independent, technical viewpoint on Industrial Hygiene governance to identify potential risks, issues, or improvement opportunities.
  • Ensure direction and requirements reflect the collective expertise and best judgment of the SME community.
  • Review and approve changes or waivers to TC Energy requirements and standards for which the TA is responsible.
  • Work closely with the field teams to facilitate integrated decision-making that balances technical, operational, and business considerations.
  • Collaborate with field based IH specialists to develop and maintain Safe Work Practices that align with the Operational Management System.
  • Champion a culture of health, safety, reliability, and continuous improvement across the organization.
  • Stay abreast of industry and discipline best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory developments to maintain technical currency.
  • Serve as a technical mentor, sharing knowledge, working with field based subject matter experts and building competence among the broader TC Energy team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in a health or natural science-related discipline (e.g. Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Physiology, Human Factors, Biology, Chemistry)
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH), or other recognized designation
  • 5-10 years of related work experience in Industrial Hygiene
  • Strong knowledge of industrial hygiene and biological/chemical/physical hazards
  • Effective organization and time management skills, to include the ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and execute activities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiar with legislative requirements governing industrial hygiene at the federal, provincial and state levels (OSHA, CCOHS and other applicable Standards)
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills to work closely with field teams and management, and coordinate work with other appropriate technical resources
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Strong planning and organizational skills. Must be able to handle rapidly shifting priorities and multiple projects concurrently
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Ability to produce technical reports, make oral presentations and conduct training sessions
  • Exceptional decision making and critical thinking aptitude and able to deal effectively with difficult and potentially conflicting situations
  • Experience and/or understanding of pipelines and gas facilities, as well as storage
