Job Description:
The Applied Planning program is seeking an exceptional individual to teach our 3D applications in planning. This will include teaching various software programs, including ArcGIS 3D Analyst, SketchUp., Adobe Creative and others.

Description of Position:
Langara College has offered an Applied Planning program since 2002, and since 2014 as a Post Degree Diploma in Applied Planning. Our classes are held in person, on campus once per week in the evening (6:00pm to 9:00pm). We are currently hiring an instructor for APPL 5320 3D Planning Applications in Planning for the Summer 2024 term.

The current course outline introduces students to 3D modelling methods using ArcGIS 3D Analyst, ArcGIS Pro and SketchUp. However, it is envisioned under a new instructor that the course outline could be expanded to include a broader array of computer programs appropriate for application in planning practice with less emphasis on 3D modelling.
Program overview:
The Langara Applied Planning Program is an intensive program designed for students with an undegraduate degree or equivalent. Applied Planning students share a passion and motivation to contribute to better and more liveable communities and a more sustainable future.
The Applied Planning program builds applied planning skills for students who wish to work in the field of planning. Courses emphasize team based learning and introduce students to case studies, practical projects, and a range of skills necessary for the practicing planner. Graduates of this program find work with planning organizations including local and regional government, consulting firms, and First Nations.
Students in the program require 15 courses to graduate from our 12-month program with a Post Degree Diploma in Applied Planning. Most students complete the program full-time. There is an optional work term which includes two additional courses. Courses typically have approximately 25 students.
Classes start at 6:00 pm and finish at 9:00 pm on an assigned weekday (Monday to Thursday). Additional time is required for the instructors to be available to students in scheduled office hours at Langara College, plus class preparation time, grading and email communication with students as needed. Field trips may be involved as well during the term.

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Planning or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of planning experience in a senior capacity for a local or regional government, planning agency or consulting firm.
  • Significant and direct and relevant experience of planning.
  • Ideally membership, or eligibility for membership of the PIBC or Canadian Institute of Planners.
  • Teaching experience, although not required, would be an advantage.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, as well as the ability to convey technical information to non-technical users
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver training materials, including lectures, exercises, and assessments

Requirements for 3D Planning Applications:

  • Strong knowledge and experience in GIS software, including ArcGIS, and other related technologies.
  • Experience teaching or training others on computer software.
  • Familiarity with a wide various computer software programs and formats, appropriate for application in planning practice, such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe InDesign, Canva.
  • Familiarity with digital data sources such as LiDAR, and orthophoto imagery and their application in computer software programs.
  • Familiarity with the Langara computer lab and software, although not required, would be an advantage.
  • Passion for planning applications and a commitment to staying up to date with the latest trends and developments in the field.

Length of appointment: Teaching: May 6 to August 31, 2024

Salary placement on Langara instructors’ salary scale in accordance with qualifications and experience.
