Description:

Argonne is hiring a Science Communications Specialist to support its Computing, Environment and Life Sciences (CELS) research area. The specialist will join a small team that carries out external and internal communications to support the lab’s work in high performance computing, artificial intelligence, computational science, environmental science and bioscience.
The Science Communications Specialist writes and edits science and technology stories, supports researchers in communicating their successes, and supports events for staff and the public. The specialist is responsible for maintaining and curating digital content on CELS webpages, Wordpress sites, and intranet, ensuring content is fresh and relevant. Additional communications products include e-newsletters, PowerPoint presentations, social media content, press releases and feature articles, and other short formats such as blog posts that share Argonne research results with peers, sponsors and stakeholders. Science writing experience in computing is particularly desirable.
As a member of the lab’s Communications and Public Affairs division, the Science Communications Specialist leverages the expertise of teams of graphic designers, video producers, photographers, media relations professionals, web and social media experts, and event coordinators to support the needs of the CELS organization.

Primary Activities:

  • Reporting to the Head of Communications for Computing, Environment and Life Sciences, support the implementation of the organization’s annual strategic communications plan.
  • Build relationships with researchers and leaders within the assigned areas.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of the subject matter and trends applicable to the organization’s science and technology.
  • Write a variety of communications products such as web content, internal articles, social media posts and press releases.
  • Curate web and intranet content in collaboration with communications colleagues and content experts.
  • Update web content in a timely fashion using the Argonne Content Management System and Wordpress.
  • Track and report key digital metrics that guide effective communications strategies.
  • Ensure that communications products align with overall laboratory messaging and branding.
  • Seek opportunities to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Argonne communications.

Position Requirements

  • Demonstrated expertise in the delivery of clear and concise communication to internal and external audiences, using traditional and digital means of delivery.
  • Writing skills in a variety of formats, in varying levels of formality, with strategic attention to tone.
  • Proficiency in translating complex information (such as scientific or technical content) for both basic and sophisticated audiences, focusing on the impact of the work in real-world terms.
  • Experience working with a website content management system.
  • Success in delivering measurable results (increased awareness, higher client satisfaction, increased engagement, etc.)
  • Client service mindset, able to take in and clarify objectives and goals of researchers and leadership.
  • Deadline driven, highly responsive and organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Able to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
  • Bachelor’s degree + 2 years of experience, or equivalent.
