(DRS Canada), a subsidiary of Leonardo DRS, is a leading mid-tier Canadian defence electronics company specializing in military voice and data communications systems; electro‑optics (EO) and infrared search and tracking systems (IRST); command, control, communications, computers and intelligence (C4I) systems integration; deployable flight data recorders; and defence/space electronics manufacturing.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Firmware Engineer is responsible for the design, development and testing of switch-mode power conversion equipment.
Responsibilities:
AS FIRMWARE ENGINEER, YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Responsible for design and implementation of control algorithms and embedded firmware for power converters (100W to 100kW) on DSP/MCU;
- Work closely with hardware designers to define project firmware/software requirements;
- Apply knowledge of CAN, SPI, USB, I2C, RS485, RS232 communication protocols to new product designs; and
- Coding using C/C++/assembly, Auto-code generation using PSIM/MATLAB, familiarity with development tools such as compilers and debuggers, thorough understanding of software development practices.
WHAT YOU REQUIRE TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE ROLE:
- Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering or equivalent work experience;
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in electrical design in a light manufacturing environment;
- Familiarity with the application of military and commercial standards to electrical designs is required;
- Ability to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electronic equipment;
- Experience reading schematics and engineering specs;
- Must have basic design capabilities and integration/troubleshooting skills;
- Multi-Layer Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design capabilities considered an asset;
- Solid understanding and strong interests in power electronics and power converters design, e.g., AC/DC, PFC, DC/DC, DC/AC, LLC and resonant converter;
- Applies electronic theory, principles of electrical circuits, testing procedures and related knowledge to construct and debug power electronics circuitry in relation to the design of power conversion equipment;
- Utilizes test equipment to perform functional, operational and environmental tests on equipment to established criteria to determine acceptability. Evaluates performance of equipment and compliance with procedures;
- Generates test procedures for new products and optimizes existing procedures where applicable;
- Reads and interprets diagrams, schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals for repair and diagnostic information;
- Performs troubleshooting and failure analysis on products and documents results. Design, build and/or procurement of new or improved tools, fixtures, jigs and coordinating the implementation;
- Analyzes, records, and interprets test data to determine product acceptability. Recommends changes in method or installation specifications to simplify tests or reduce test times; and
- Involved in the design, development, modification and analysis of various electronics systems. Supports engineering with a variety of complex engineering duties and/or hands on tasks
