JOB SUMMARY:

Department of Pediatrics, Section of Neonatology has an opening for a full-time University Staff Intermediate Laboratory Sciences Professional position.
The Chang Laboratory in the Department of Pediatrics, Section of Neonatology investigates the mechanism of brain injury in common perinatal diseases including intrauterine growth restriction and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. This laboratory is part of the larger Perinatal Research Center, the longest-standing research and educational program at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Faculty who conduct studies at the Center are on the leading edge of research in maternal, placental, and fetal physiology. In this role, you will have the opportunity to develop your laboratory skills and contribute to meaningful research while playing a crucial part in the advancement of science and medicine.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or a related field.
  • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • One (1) year of professional-level research experience.
    Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience or background within an experimental or wet lab.
  • Experience with small animal handling preferred.
  • Experience with microscopy preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficient knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information.

Responsibilities:

  • 80% - Perform tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy techniques.
  • 10% - Determine genotypes and gene expression, specifically work including PCR, and quantitative RT-PCR.
  • 8% - Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas.
  • 2% - Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well-established guidelines and instructions.
