Great opportunity to embark with MQ Health as we seek an Interventional Pulmonology and Respiratory Fellow to provide clinical services in their 2025 program.

To be considered for this position, you will demonstrate the below requirements in your CV and a 1-2 page cover letter:

  • Demonstrated experience in Respiratory Medicine, including highly developed clinical skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in Respiratory Procedures and Interventional Procedures with logbook evidence and ideally Recognition of Competence Certificates by the Thoracic Society of Australia and NZ
  • Evidence of completed Fellowship of the relevant specialist College or Faculty (FRACP), or close to completion or hold an equivalent qualification.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the patients’ perspective and ability to communicate key information to the patient and carers.
  • Demonstrated interest and aptitude for one or more of the following activities: supervision of students; or delivery of educational activities; or research.
  • Demonstrated high level understanding of the discipline including major international trends, recent developments and improvements.
  • A strong commitment to multidisciplinary approaches to clinical care and ability to work as part of a team

    The Role:
    MQ Health is seeking an Interventional Pulmonology and Respiratory Fellow to provide clinical services for both respiratory inpatients and outpatients. The role has a major Interventional component with Macquarie University Hospital at the forefront of this subspecialty and a designated centre of excellence for Interventional Pulmonology (IP). Interventional Pulmonology is a Flagship Service of MQ Health.
    MQ Health Respiratory is a leading centre in both management and research into bronchoscopic techniques for lung volume reduction in COPD. This includes endobronchial valves, thermal liquid ablation, airway bypass devices and the use of polymer sealant. We are also a major referral centre in the interventional management of central airways disease, lung cancer diagnosis and treatment, refractory asthma, bronchiectasis and interstitial lung disease. With the imminent onset of lung cancer screening, we have developed a comprehensive lung nodule program with the advanced diagnosis and management of peripheral nodules as a centrepiece. This includes the use of ultrathin bronchoscopes, robotic bronchoscopy systems and the integration of cone beam CT guidance.
    MQ Health Respiratory is the only IP centre outside the United States that is a designated accredited AABIP/AIPPD (American Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology and Association of Interventional Pulmonology Program Directors) training site. We adhere to the AABIP/AIPPD curriculum, and the successful fellow will be assessed alongside U.S. colleagues, has access to educational material and events while working towards appropriate certification with the AABIP. Further to this, MQ Health are one of only 3 centres in NSW with a dedicated pleural service.

    About You
    You will be a new fellow seeking to further your skills in interventional pulmonology (IP). You will be keen to work in an innovative multidisciplinary environment and be passionate about providing patient centred care. You will have experience working within busy inpatient settings, while balancing supervision, teaching and mentoring of junior staff and medical students. You will have an interest in research, working towards a Masters thesis by completion of the 2 year programme.

The role will provide the opportunity to: (not limited to)

  • Be mentored and work alongside a team of respiratory and sleep physicians and other specialists within the team.
  • Be exposed to a wide range of respiratory cases and procedures including both linear and radial EBUS, rigid bronchoscopy, cryobiopsy of both central and peripheral lung lesions, robotic and CBCT guided bronchoscopy, endoscopic laser resection and stent deployment and bronchial thermoplasty in the management of refractory asthma.
  • Develop skills in performing pleural procedures under the guidance of the clinical supervisor. MQ Health has and established and dedicated pleural service.
  • Collaborate with groups across MQ Health to participate in research projects and clinical trial studies including first in human projects investigating novel methods to achieve ELVR in COPD with liquid thermal ablation and airway bypass devices.
  • Undertake a unique two-year interventional pulmonology programme. The first year focuses on hands-on interventional techniques and procedures while the second year is dedicated to an independent body of research to be written up as a thesis contributing to a Master of Research.
