Boeing Defence UK is looking for an IT Support Engineer to support the day to day operations and maintenance of the Gladiator core systems and services. This is an onsite role, based at Waddington.
You will be able to demonstrate previous experience in supporting synthetic training equipment and be willing to develop new or existing skills including; learning, supporting, fault diagnosis and corrective action on a combination of COTS and tailored applications. The role requires a proven understanding of sophisticated networking protocols, traffic routing, firewalls, security, cross domain security, servers, distributed simulation, collective training and simulation standards HLA/DIS. A curiosity about aviation, aircraft, military operations or flight simulation will also be advantageous.
As a predominantly an application/software role, we are open to all abilities with previous IT experience, many of the applications used in-house are tailored or COTS software heavily modified to meet the needs of the business, therefore it is not crucial that you meet all of the skills or experience outlined in this job description as long as you are dedicated, hardworking and willing to work towards mastering these skills.
Your collaboration and collective working will be essential to this project so effective communication and good teamwork with other members of the team and wider Boeing teams is imperative. You will need to be an innovative individual who can actively contribute to new insights and mobilise the strategy of the Gladiator programme. It is important to have a good working relationship with our Customer and sound understanding of their needs, to ensure the Gladiator programme is as effective as possible.

PREFERRED SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Knowledge of one of more of the following technologies including; Application Support, RedHat Linux, Docker, Remote Desktop, Networking, Cross Domain Security, Software Implementation or Communications would be desirable.
  • A vested curiosity about continuously embracing modern technology to improve the system capabilities to maintain a groundbreaking training capability for the MoD.
  • Knowledge of RHEL Linux and containerized applications (Docker).
  • Ability to develop innovative engineering solutions independently and collectively.
  • Fault find and understand large sophisticated systems.
  • Experience in application support and integration with both COTS and In-House applications required.
  • Batch, Scripting & Process development.
  • A solid understanding of deployment, management and configuration of software systems.
  • A firm grasp of source control (git).
  • Knowledge of networked systems and protocols.
  • Understanding of HLA/DIS in distributed simulation.

Responsibilities:

YOUR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES SHALL INCLUDE:

  • Accomplishes system initialisation and configuration, system operations, system monitoring, rapid fault diagnosis in accordance with SLA’s, implement hotfix and workarounds to ensure successful training outcomes and maximum system uptime.
  • Post operation tasks and system shutdown. Restoring environments to a predefined configuration and state in preparation for the next operational requirement of the capability.
  • Performs corrective actions and preventive maintenance, solving and authorised modifications on hardware and software to resolve technical, design, quality, operational and other issues with the system.
  • Interrogate system, software and infrastructure logs, dump files and console outputs to identify and resolve bugs or faults existing within the software/system.
  • Performs deployment of configuration and software using a variety of deployment and source control tools (PDQ, Git/Bitbucket, Batch/Python/PowerShell scripts).
  • Routine maintenance of hardware and software.
  • Provides daily operation and/or support for the Gladiator system to include liaison with MoD and civilian instructional staff in exercise planning and preparation, communicating system limitations, solving and standard methodology.
  • Use of the Gladiator core software tools such as VR-Forces, Remote Desktop and Atlassian collaboration tools.
  • Work closely with third-party suppliers to resolve any issues or faults.
  • Work closely with wider Boeing teams, including integration and testing teams.
  • Liaise with internal teams to develop software, systems and processes to continuously improve system performance, functionality and efficiency.
  • Maintain system documentation, follow approved processes and update records as the need arises.
  • Ensure compliance with data and physical security instructions.
  • Support major system modification or fault rectification, which may require manual handling and lifting, and limited working at heights

THIS ROLE IS EXPECTED TO BE 100% ONSITE AND WILL OPERATE ON SHIFT PATTERN.
