POSITION DESCRIPTION

Classroom teachers are expected to plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. The Art Teacher will be responsible for developing in each student an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques of artistic expression consistent with school guidelines; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of art. This position reports to the Director of Fine Arts and STEAM with a dotted line to the respective academy principals.

Responsibilities:

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach knowledge and skills in art, including drawing, painting, lettering, art history, ceramics, printmaking, fibers, AP Art, etc.
  • Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school
  • Provide instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art
  • Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing and painting
  • Understand the versatility of various media and materials
  • Understand a variety of “masters” techniques
  • Knows and can apply elements of design and principles of art
  • Knows the fundamentals and different approaches to drawing media technique
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities
  • Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment
  • Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection
  • Evaluate each student’s performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepare progress reports
  • Select and requisition books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students’ work for the school and the community
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school and/or in self-selected professional growth activities
  • Participate in leadership activities by sharing and inspiring others the importance of art at our STEAM school through in house PD, presenting at state or national conferences
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors on pupil progress
  • Lead developmental programs, such as art club/NAHS
  • Collaborate with other teachers to promote interdisciplinary education particularly in STEAM
  • Possible co-teaching with another core academic class to uphold integrated teaching practices at Drew
  • Use and promote design thinking skills
  • Foster constructive dialogue through facilitating art critiques and presentation for each project
  • Enhance literacy in art by executing artist statement to accompany art projects
  • Generate breakthrough ideas to create authentic PBL lessons
  • Develop and maintain traditional and digital portfolios with students to archive in school wide digital platform
  • Utilize emerging technology in traditional art classes to develop and maintain 21st century skills
  • Establish a well-managed, safe, and orderly environment that is conducive to learning and encourages respect for all
  • Teach specific visual arts subject matter to a diverse high school student population, following the Georgia Standards of Excellence using a Project-Based Learning approach
  • Employ a variety of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment strategies and instruments that are valid and appropriate for the content and student population.
  • Systematically gather, analyze, and use relevant data to measure student progress, to inform instructional content and delivery methods, and to provide timely and constructive feedback to both students & parents.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents or guardians, school personnel, and other stakeholders in ways that enhance student learning

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as an advisor to 15-20 students using the school’s advisory curriculum
  • Sponsor a club or organization that meets weekly during the school day
  • Serve in a leadership capacity coaching, chairing a committee, serving as a team leader or sponsoring an extra-curricular activity
  • Fulfill duty responsibilities as directed by supervisor(s)
