JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Journalism & Public Relations (JPR), accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC), has approximately 35 full- and part-time faculty; two (BA) majors with 450 declared students; two minors with 100 students; and close to 1,000 FTES per academic year. The CLA student media cohort (four outlets) consists of Long Beach Current (formerly the Daily 49er), DIG Mag, EÑYE Magazine, Beach TV News, and the Beach Media student business team. Collectively, Beach Media employs more than 75 students each semester, is awarded at minimum $150,000 in IRA funding and earns tens of thousands of additional funding through advertising, sponsorships and fundraising each year. Under direct supervision of the department chair, the JPR assistant primarily aids the JPR department coordinator with the daily operations of the JPR department; and provides support to the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) with student media administrative needs.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with a variety of people, faculty, staff, students, and vendors. Working knowledge of office methods, procedures, and practices relating to an academic environment. Ability to perform and concentrate in noisy environment that involves independent judgment, accuracy, and speed. Working knowledge of Windows, Word, Word Press, Adobe Acrobat Pro, email, spreadsheet, databases, Ad Astra, and CMS for PC. Develop and deliver essential information through written and oral interactions.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university’s commitment to a “vision of excellence.”

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Equivalent to three years of administrative support experience required.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred. Academic department and/or student media experience preferred.

PHYSICAL SUMMARY

Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects
(10 pounds or less).

Responsibilities:

  • Assists department coordinator and chair with various processes and projects: Preparation of direct payment, travel, and hospitality requests.
  • Supports the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) with student media administrative needs: Organizes purchase orders and printing of publications.
  • Receives visitors and take and direct telephone calls, as one of two individuals that serves as first point-of-contact for the Journalism and Public Relations Department and student media. Maintains appearance of offices and posted materials (physical and virtually).
