DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position requires interaction with criminal offenders.
This position is responsible for the intake of all new supervised and unsupervised probation cases and, in specified areas, monitoring deferred prosecution (deferred prosecution cases that require supervision will be referred to a Probation Officer).

The position shall obtain information from criminal offenders regarding new probation and community service cases placed under Community Supervision’s authority. This entails:

  • Interviewing offenders,
  • Entering data into the appropriate software system,
  • Assigning offenders for supervision,
  • Determining if the offender requires interpreter services,
  • Identifying if the offender requires accommodations under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act),
  • Providing reporting instructions to the offender, and,
  • Processing intrastate and interstate transfer cases out of court.

This Judicial Services Coordinator position is usually located in or near the courthouse. Position is frequently in court and will associate with judges, lawyers, District Attorneys, Clerk of Court, law enforcement, etc.
The position will monitor for compliance offenders sentenced to community service, including placement of both unsupervised and supervised offenders at an agency to perform work hours and may monitor a low-risk-low needs offender caseload.
The mission of Community Supervision is to protect the safety of citizens in communities throughout the state by providing viable alternatives and meaningful supervision to offenders on probation, parole, or post-release supervision. The primary goal of Community Supervision is to reach an equal balance of control and treatment for offenders that will positively affect their behavior and lifestyle patterns.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with benefits.
The salary grade for this position is NC05. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be calculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability and internal equity. Based on these factors, a pay increase or decrease may result.
Work assignments may include providing technical support to staff within the state court through acceptance, examination and processing of legal documents and providing pre-sentence, pre-parole, post release investigations. The incumbent will perform a variety of administrative tasks including but not limited to preparing documents and tracking status of cases.
Work involves significant contact with members and officials of the judicial system, community agencies, victims, and offenders, serving as the agency’s representative in court, the community, and in maintaining public awareness of the community service program.
The Judicial Services Coordinator should have the ability to exhibit a working knowledge of local and regional community resources to address the placement of monitored offenders.

Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Must behave in a professional manner at all times as this position holds a highly visible position within Community Supervision.
Must possess exceptional time management and organizational skills and must be able to work under stressful situations.
Must work as a member of a team in a variety of activities to include court intake.

Management prefers knowledge of:

  • Structured sentencing
  • The Community Service Work Program
  • Local and community resources to address the placement of offenders in the community.

Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, human services, psychology, or related field of study from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
or
Associate degree in criminal justice, human services, psychology, or related field of study from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in the court system, paralegal work, or other directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
or
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of experience in the court system, paralegal work, or other directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
