JOB TITLE: Junior Clinical/Education Fellow – General Surgery
NUMBER OF POSTS: 2 posts
RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Undergraduate Education/Clinical Module Lead for Surgery
LOCATION: East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust
HOURS UNDERTAKEN: Full time
JOB TYPE: 12 month post to commence 7th August 2024 contracting ending 6th August 2025.
The Role
These unique posts provide rich opportunities to develop interests and expertise in medical education whilst broadening your clinical experience.
We have a vacancy for two Junior Clinical/Education Fellow to commence 7th August 2024 for 12 months.
The posts will 50% educational and 50% clinical service provision (clinical attachment in General Surgery) and you will work 2 six month rotations between clinical and education duties.
Funding will be made available for the successful applicants to complete a medical educational qualification (if undertaking the role for a full 12 months only) if the candidate does not already have this qualification. The qualification and higher education institute where this will be undertaken will be determined by the Trust.
Clinical Role - General Surgery (50% of time per candidate)
The post holder will be expected to provide a patient centred service, respecting the privacy, dignity and choice of individual patients. They will be responsible with general surgery colleagues for the provision of Emergency general surgery services within the East Lancashire Hospital Trust; and there is also some cross-cover with vascular surgery, Urology and ENT at Junior Clinical Fellow level as part of the SAS rota duties.
The post holder will observe and comply with clinical and non-clinical policies and procedures (including local and national employment and personnel policies) agreed with employees and management.
The post holder will be closely involved in clinical audit and other clinical governance issues.
There is excellent opportunity to gain experience in caring for both elective and emergency general surgical patients, and acquire skills in emergency, day case and elective HPB/Colorectal surgery.
Education Role
These will be multi-professional sessions and will span a broad range of specialities and topics. Although we will look to utilise any special interests or knowledge, your education delivery will not be limited to any specific speciality.
The majority of the post holder’s role will be focused towards undergraduate medical students and physician associates in locality. However it is strongly expected that you will make some contribute to the education of other learners within the Trust

General Surgery
We are a progressive dynamic department of 16 Consultants, 1 Associate Specialist, 9 Specialist Registrars, 7 Middle Grades, 2 CT’s, 3 FY2s, 6 FY1s and a team of Specialist Nurses.
The SAS (on-call) team currently includes: 9 Specialist Registrars, 7 full time Senior Clinical Fellows (registrar level), and 16 CTs/FY2s/Junior Clinical Fellows (including this post), and 19 FY1s. The team is also currently assisted by 3 Advanced Nurse Practitioners.
The Directorate of General Surgery provides inpatient, emergency and day case surgery to the catchment population, including upper and lower GI Surgery. In addition, it provides tertiary level Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) services for Lancashire and South Cumbria.
All major surgery takes place at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital where we are supported by a 32 bedded Critical Care Unit run by specialist Intensivists, a 4 bedded Post-Operative Care Unit, and a full range of diagnostic and interventional radiology services. We also have a dedicated Vascular Ward.
