OVERVIEW:

The Advanced Engineering Technologies (AET) Group is seeking a dedicated Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls (EIC) Engineer to support our organization. The position will involve system architecture, design, implementation, and testing, including hands on research and development work. Projects will also include maintenance and upgrades to existing systems. AET resides within the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The NND is a division operating within the National Security Sciences Directorate. NND staff contributes world class research, technology development, risk assessment, and systems analysis related to nonproliferation and counterproliferation. The division activities play a vital role in implementation of national policy issues that strive to ensure global nuclear security. One of the major focus areas of the AET group is advanced approaches to operation, characterization, and analysis of nuclear fuel cycle processes. The group specializes in the application of engineering principles supporting the characterization of processes and related materials. The AET group collaborates and works with staff from other groups within NND and ORNL to assure the full expertise of fuel cycle processes are applied to meet sponsor needs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A B.S. in Electrical Engineering or related field, and a minimum of 2 years related experience; a M.S. in Electrical Engineering or related field, and a minimum of 1 years of related experience.
  • Experience in facility and or pilot plant design of electrical or I&C systems with hands on experience to include:
  • PLC Systems and hard-wired analog control systems
  • Development of electrical engineering design packages
  • Generation of the automation scope and requirements for projects
  • The design of control panels, motor panels and HMI panels
  • The design of control and information networks
  • The development of panel/system IO list(s)
  • Proven communication skills
  • The ability to work flexible hours and travel

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated expertise in custom electronics, and I&C systems with hands on experience to include:
  • Design of power, lighting, communications, and fire alarm systems
  • Generation of arc flash studies
  • Experience in an R&D and/or testing environment
  • Experience in building new test stands or processes via an in-house design/build and acceptance testing process or via design/build procurement pathways
  • AutoCAD or Solidworks Electrical experience
  • Experience in the calibration and maintenance of instrumentation
  • TS/SCI Clearance

Responsibilities:

Our new hire, in collaboration with principal investigators and project management at ORNL, will participate in design, fabrication, assembly, and operation of experimental test stands. This individual will supervise maintaining the power and/or instrumentation and controls systems of new or existing test hardware as well as leading the architecture, design, fabrication/build, and commissioning of new systems. In addition to these responsibilities, you will be a contributor to R&D projects that involve electro-mechanical systems and integrated data acquisition systems. The Junior EIC Engineer will be expected to optimally interact with various ORNL staff as well as internal and external sponsors. The candidate is expected to work in a team environment with co-workers and management as well as independently; to fully document work performed in the forms of technical reports, papers, and presentations; and to participate in the development of research proposals. Excellent communication skills including verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required. Our new hire will communicate with principal investigators, management, engineers, fabricators, modelers, and test campaign personnel.
