REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor of Civil Law and 2 to 4 years of experience
  • Experience should focus on intellectual property, regulatory, administrative and student affairs.
  • Member of the Barreau du Quebec.
  • Strong analytical, writing and research skills; a high degree of motivation; and a commitment to teamwork.
  • Ability to work well autonomously and in a team in a dynamic, result-driven, service environment is essential.
  • Very good knowledge (level 5) of written and spoken French and English.
  • Ability to draft, negotiate and advise on agreements, opinions, correspondence in French and English.
  • Ability to work under pressure and with tight deadlines.
  • Ability to undertake a diverse range of complex projects and activities simultaneously and effectively.
  • Possessing a high standard of discretion, judgement and professionalism essential for working in a highly confidential environment.
  • Capacity to interact with senior administration.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the daily demands as well as long-term planning efforts of the Secretary-General and General Counsel, the Senior Legal Counsel and Legal Counsels, by assisting in the prioritization and execution of overall University legal goals and objectives related to intellectual property, regulatory, administrative and student affairs matters and related fields.
  • Provide legal opinions, guidance and practical solutions on a wide variety of intellectual property, regulatory, administrative and student affairs’ dossiers and activities as well as general legal matters. Maintain a legal watch and support clients regarding recent precedents and amendments to acts and regulations in the areas of intellectual property, regulatory, administrative and student affairs matters with a goal to identify and recommend alternate approaches and solutions.
  • Participate in the preparation of various intellectual property, regulatory, administrative, and student affairs related legal proceedings, including but not limited to trademarks, copyright issues, small claims, intellectual property, litigation involving students, and court proceedings.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders and conduct research to provide legal analysis and advice to university members. As well, conduct research for the Legal team in support of their respective mandates, when required.
  • Draft, review and negotiate a variety of legal opinions, contracts, settlement agreements and other legal instruments.
  • Remain current of statutory and regulatory enactments/amendments and civil law, in particular in the fields of intellectual property, regulatory, administrative and student affairs matters, and recommend appropriate operational, compliance and/or policy responses.
  • Work with external counsel as required.
  • Perform other duties and work in other files as assigned by the Secretary-General and General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel and the Legal Counsels.
