Context/Scope:
Tax is a global function with over 250 employees in teams across 29 locations. Global Tax are responsible for ensuring appropriate procedures, controls and guidelines are established and suitable training and education is provided to manage key tax risks. As owners of the Tax strategy, Global Tax aim to optimise our tax position through proactive tax planning and risk management, aligned with our commercial strategy and structures.
The Global Indirect Tax team in the Global Tax department covers customs, excise, VAT and environmental taxes. It is made up of approximately 50 people located in 19 countries. The Subject Matter Expert (SME) team within that provides Indirect Tax advice/support to the business on queries, local/regional and global projects, Tax Authority queries and audits and to other teams including setting best practices and policies.

Market Complexity
Diageo is the world’s largest premium drinks company.
This role covers UK and Ireland which are amongst the most complex markets in Diageo due to complex production, marketing, distribution and headquarters activities.
Purpose of Role
The role is a temporary backfill for the VAT Junior Manager role for 12-15 months. It requires a sound technical understanding of UK, Irish and European VAT legislation relating to both domestic and cross border transactions. Ideally the role will require some knowledge of how other taxes (notably customs and excise) interact with VAT.
The role is key in supporting the SME team in providing VAT technical advice, and support to the Business Units and Global Functions on UK and Irish VAT queries and projects.
Internally, it is expected to have a high degree of interaction with the other SMEs as well as VAT Compliance, UK/Irish Tax Business Partners, and the Technology and Governance teams.
Externally, it will support the SME team’s relationships with advisors, Tax Authorities and other third parties in the UK and Ireland.
This role is an integral part of ensuring Global Tax is able to deliver its objectives of supporting the business and proactively managing indirect tax risks. It ensures that Diageo continues to maintain its high standards in terms of strategic VAT management and value protection.

Top Accountabilities

  • Support the Indirect Tax SME team in the provision of VAT technical support and advice on UK/Irish VAT matters to the UK/Irish Tax Business Partners, Business Units, Global Tax Compliance/ Technology/ Governance teams
  • Support the Indirect Tax SME team and UK/Irish Tax Business Partners to facilitate the collation, organisation and provision of information for the business and Tax Authorities ensuring timely resolution of queries and open issues.
  • Support the Indirect Tax SME team in the delivery of the Global VAT strategy in the UK/Ireland and liaise with key partners.
  • Support the Indirect Tax SME team/Tax Business Partners in the management of relationships, queries and audits with the UK/Irish Tax Authorities on VAT matters.

Qualifications
Relevant professional qualification and 5 years of experience in UK/Irish/European VAT legislation, preferably either within HMRC, a tax department of a Big 4 accountancy practice or an in-house tax department.

Experience

  • Detailed practical experience of UK, Irish and European VAT procedures including governance, controls, compliance and related accounting and documentation.
  • Detailed knowledge of the UK and EU VAT legislation and how it is interpreted and applied in the UK, Ireland and other EU territories with specific regard to cross-border supplies of goods and services.
  • Knowledge of SAP or equivalent systems a definite advantage.
  • Experience with the VAT rules/implications of domestic and cross border Direct to Consumer/eCommerce/Retail systems/platforms and eInvoicing an advantage
  • Working knowledge of interaction between VAT and other taxes, particularly excise and customs duties
