SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and community networks.
  • Demonstrated high standard of administrative and organisational skills, including skills in document presentation, database maintenance, and the use of Microsoft software.
  • High level of communication for both internal and external audiences.
  • Demonstrated strong Koorie community networks, and connections to support desired outcomes for Koorie students.
  • Excellent organisational skills with a particular focus on prioritising duties.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience of enhancing cultural competency and fostering cultural inclusiveness.
  • A current Working with Children Check (Employee).

Responsibilities:

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Koorie Student Support Officer responsibilities follow the Wurreker and Aboriginal Education Strategy commitments made by Melbourne Polytechnic, by making education accessible and culturally inclusive for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The Koorie Student Support Office role is a key role in the Koorie Services Centre, working in a flexible and collegiate manner to ensure enrolled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students receive the appropriate support throughout their educational journey with Melbourne Polytechnic.

DUTIES:

  • Provide general advice in this specialised area, assist students with the enrolment process and provide information about how to commence studies effectively at Melbourne Polytechnic.
  • Act as a primary point of contact to assist students will all aspects of their studies, problem solving any complex concerns and information on further study options.
  • Work with Koorie Services team to develop and review policies and procedures relating to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Melbourne Polytechnic students.
  • Maintain incoming communications from students and community, including answering all communications in a timely manner, referring student communications onto appropriate internal or external areas, and providing support to community or complex enquiries.
  • Supervise the Koorie Student Common Room, including the ordering of supplies, ensuring this location is clean and culturally inclusive, and raising awareness of this facility for student use.
  • Establish and maintain positive and beneficial networks with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, organisations and stakeholders, including attending network group meetings as directed.
  • Manage outgoing communications to students, including informing current students of events, scholarship information, employment opportunities, and other information as necessary.
