Legal Aid Alberta is seeking to fill a full time, Compliance and Quality of Service Lawyer postion in our Calgary or Edmonton office. This position will appeal to an individual that likes to take initiative, is client focused and is exceptionally strong in delivering high-quality results.

Job Description

Reporting to the Managing Director, Certificate Standards and Compliance, some of the key responsibilities include:

  • Receive and investigate compliance and quality of service complaints about lawyers to ensure adherence to Legal Aid Alberta standards, policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate complex investigations, working with auditor and investigator.
  • Make recommendations to senior management for remedial or disciplinary measures available under organizational policy.
  • Consult with internal or external stakeholders to conclude matters as determined appropriate.
  • Provide advice and/or assist in the development, implementation, evaluation, and modification of Legal Aid Alberta standards, policies and procedures relating to compliance and quality of service.
  • Analyse and assess risks, data analysis.
  • Prepare and present clear, concise, and insightful reports.
  • Draft issue papers and conduct legal research.
  • Participate in strategic planning including development of new initiatives and changes to current programs or projects for Certificate Standards and Compliance group.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Law degree from a recognized law school.
  • Active member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
  • Previous experience in related areas of law (Criminal and Family Law considered an asset)
  • 5 – 7 years of related experience, ideally with an emphasis on regulation, prosecution and/or compliance and risk management.
  • Ability to develop legal strategy and objectives and anticipate legal issues or risks.
  • Strong attention to detail, and analytical skills.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices relating to compliance, audit and investigation.
  • Knowledge of Legal Aid Alberta Policies, Tariff, and other Rules of the organization.
  • Knowledge of the Legal Profession Act, the Law Society of Alberta Code of Conduct, and the Rules of the Law Society of Alberta.
  • Knowledge of Alberta Court of Justice and King’s Bench rules and procedures.
  • Ability to produce concise and clear reports and correspondence and present legal information clearly.
  • Experience and skills demonstrated in analytics, planning and decision-making
  • Ability to exercise judgment, diplomacy, and tact.
  • Ability to work independently and foster effective working relationships internally and externally and work within a multiple multidisciplinary disciplinary team
  • Strong personal practice management skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Well-organized and able to deal with conflicting immediate priorities
