Description:

Legal Aid Alberta is seeking to fill a full time permanent, Communications Coordinator in Edmonton or Calgary. This position will appeal to an individual that likes to take initiative, is client focused and is exceptionally strong in delivering high-quality results.

Job Description

Reporting to the Director, Communications and Public Relations, some of the key responsibilities include:

  • Research, interview, write and edit compelling communications materials, including stories, speaking notes, web content, newsletters, social media posts, media releases, backgrounders and various collateral materials.
  • Collaborate with business units and staff in the preparation of Communications plans (e.g., identifying target audiences, key messages, Communication tools, etc.)
  • Develop or participate in the development of public information and other Communication materials under the plan.
  • Assist with developing, designing, updating, and editing print, digital, and video information, marketing, and communications materials (e.g., brochures, internal and external web content, news releases, backgrounders, newsletters).
  • Under the direction of Director, plan, develop, design, and arrange for printing/publication of various marketing and communications materials.
  • Support in the planning, development, editing and execution of publications including the legislatively required Legal Aid Alberta Annual Report.
  • Assist in ensuring print, digital, social media, and video publications are compliant with LAA style and branding guidelines.
  • Monitors LAA social media and advises the Director of emerging issues.
  • Provide social media monitoring support after hours as necessary, especially during an emergency.
  • Independently creates and schedules social media posts, monitors LAA social media and advises the Manager of emerging issues.
  • Write, add, remove, and edit web content as necessary, introducing new style guidelines as appropriate.
  • Manages the inventory and distribution of LAA templates and promotional materials
  • Provides promotional support for LAA hosted and community events as needed.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • A degree or diploma in communications or a related discipline from a recognized institution or a combination of education and experience.
  • Experience within the justice system is an asset.
  • 1 to 3 years experience in communications or a related discipline.
  • Use of creative software such as Canva, InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop are an asset.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of HTML and CSS and especially SharePoint and WordPress environments are an asset.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Strong online communication abilities.
  • Proficient in Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop are an asset.
  • Ability to use or gain experience in photography and videography.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Project management, time management and the ability to multi-task effectively.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to build strong client relationships.
  • Inquiring and analytical mind with an on-going interest in the non-profit and legal environment.
