Description:

Legal Aid Alberta is seeking to fill a full time, Human resources Business Partner (HRBP) in our downtown Edmonton office. This position will appeal to an individual with a broad range of experience in core HR disciplines such as employee relations, labour relations, recruitment & selection, work force planning and organizational effectiveness, performance management, attendance and disability management, health and safety, policy development and interpretation, employee and leadership development, and employee engagement.

Job Description
Reporting to the Manager, Human Resources, some of the key responsibilities include:

Client Service

  • Provide day-to-day consultation, guidance, and support on a variety of employee relation issues
  • Provide direction and support to leaders on the interpretation and application of LAA policies, Collective Agreement, and/or governing legislation in relation to specific situations that arise in the workplace.
  • Analyze key metrics, dashboards, and other reports to determine organizational trends, patterns and talent information that is critical to supporting effective business decision-making.
  • Identifying opportunities and working collaboratively with leaders and employees to implement action plans to improve workplace effectiveness and enhance employee engagement.
  • Providing proactive performance coaching and guidance to leaders and employees to resolve or diffuse interpersonal conflicts and/or improve the effectiveness of working relationships amongst employee groups.
  • Participate in the job evaluation process to recommend and determine salary ranges for newly created positions.
  • Establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with AUPE to foster open communication and resolution of any disputes or grievances that may arise.

Recruitment & Selection

  • Manage full cycle recruitment activities including maintaining and creating job descriptions, sourcing and screening of candidates, coordinating and conducting interviews, reference checks, and recommendations for selection of candidates.

Performance Management Planning

  • Providing guidance and support to leaders with the annual performance planning/management cycle within assigned client areas.
  • Advising leaders with developing and carrying out action plans to address growth and developmental opportunities and performance deficiencies or challenges.
  • Providing consultative advice and guidance in identifying high potential employees and developing suitable career paths and employee development and succession plans.

Employee & Leadership Development

  • Identifying, in partnership with management team, the development opportunities for leaders and staff within assigned client group
  • Determining the appropriate approach/response to address developmental opportunities
  • Assist senior management in developing and facilitating in-house training programs.

Policy Development/Research

  • Participating and/or leading research, development, and implementation of new or revised Human Resources policies for LAA.
  • Maintaining awareness of industry trends and best practices through ongoing professional development.
  • Identifying and recommending changes to LAA’s policies, programs, or procedures to improve organizational effectiveness and/or achieve business objectives.

Projects and Initiatives

  • Leading and/or participating in projects, initiatives or committees based on organizational requirements, skill/expertise, interest, and capacity/availability.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 3 – 5 years working experience in Human Resources with at least one (1) year as an HR generalist or business partner.
  • Completion of a Degree or Diploma in Business, Management, Human Resources or equivalency.
  • CPHR Designation is an asset
  • Previous experience in providing Human Resource services in a unionized work environment is an asset.
  • Previous experience in a professional services environment.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Applied knowledge of progressive HR management practices, principles, legislation, standards and regulations.
  • Understanding of strategic HR partnership in driving business results and teaching leaders how to effectively partner with HR.
  • Knowledge of relevant HR policies, procedures and best practices, strategic planning and project management.
  • Computer literacy, including effective working skills of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Employment Legislation, Human Rights Legislation, Employment Standards and regulations.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to express ideas and recommendations clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Strong facilitation and coaching skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and to positively influence change.
  • Executional excellence with the ability to handle multiple assignments and changing priorities effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong initiative and action orientated with a sense of urgency to get things completed.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others in a team environment.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
