- Kennaook / Cape Grim Baseline Air Pollution Station
The Bureau is looking for a highly experienced, motivated Senior Officer to manage a small team of technicians, and the operation of the Kennaook / Cape Grim Baseline Air Pollution Station (KCGBAPS) workshops and laboratories.
This Laboratory Manager position, within the Observing Systems and Operations (OSO) Program, is unique in its global responsibilities. KCGBAPS is a critical component of Australia’s contribution to the Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) Network. Data collected at this site underpins Australia’s obligations under the Paris Agreement, other important international environmental conventions and to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). Therefore, the role requires an exceptionally committed and qualified candidate to ensure KCGBAPS remains at the leading edge of atmospheric composition measurement.
The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the management of the deployment, integration, quality assurance, safety and on-going maintenance of the scientific instrumentation within KCGBAPS laboratories in collaboration with the Lead Scientists who form the Science Program at KCGBAPS. They will be responsible for the technical aspects of instrumentation such as maintenance and optimisation, managing risks and ensuring successful project delivery.
The Laboratory Manager will have excellent communication and engagement skills suited to cooperating with Lead Scientists and Technical Officers across the Bureau, CSIRO and other collaborating institutions. They will have detailed knowledge of and relevant experience using software-intensive electro-mechanical systems.
They will have an in-depth understanding of scientific instrumentation that uses gas chromatography and mass spectrometry as well as other specialised techniques designed for atmospheric composition measurement.
They will participate in ensuring the quality assurance of data to achieve compatibility benchmarks set out by the WMO to be included in the GAW Network. The successful candidate will help meet the world-class standards expected of KCGBAPS and ensure the laboratory operations utilise best practice with respect to safe work practices and safety documentation.
The Laboratory Manager will report directly to the Officer in Charge (EL2L).
