Job Summary:
Primary Function
The ideal candidate would be an Apprentice or a Graduate.
Day to day would involve working in a Gas Lab with a focus on testing and calibration of Gas Detectors. Some experience or knowledge of Spectrophotometry would be advantageous, but not mandatory. Typical equipment used in these tasks would be pressure sensors, flow meters, gas mixing pumps and temperature sensors. The job would also involve the internal calibration of these items.
There is a requirement to work with compressed gasses, regulators, and gas cylinders so some existing practical/hands on experience would be advantageous.
Existing experience or knowledge of gas chromatography would be beneficial but is not mandatory.
The ideal candidate would hold a qualification or be working towards a qualification such as a BTEC, in a Science subject such as chemistry or Physics.
Without supervision, conducts a wide range of test procedures, accurately obtains and records data, interprets results, and performs R&D projects that are not standardized. Technician assembles and disassembles test samples and may make modifications to experimental set-ups and troubleshoot malfunctions. Maintains and initiates direct client contact to provide and ask for information. Provides ongoing feedback to Manager and Certifier regarding suggested modifications to experimental apparatus and / or equipment being developed. May assist in work outside the laboratories as required. Processes paperwork projects where no engineering is involved.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assumes total responsibility for the completion of assigned projects within negotiated time and cost schedules.
  • Conducts a wide range of test procedures on sample equipment to the applicable standards and interprets results of the test. Determines or works with Certifier confirming which tests are required; the order in which to perform tests and the number of samples required. Performs tests and calculations, compiles data and summarizes test results into test reports and checklists. Verifies calculations are consistent with results of measurements. Determines whether product passes or fails subject to review by Certifier.
  • Assembles and disassembles test samples, hooks-up laboratory test equipment in preparation for testing; operates most laboratory test equipment without supervision.
  • Records technical data, draft reports, writes product descriptions. Performs mathematical calculations required to summarize test results. Relates test results to product specifications. Acts as a liaison with other departments as required by supervisor.
  • Notes and records substandard features of products which may appear before or during the tests and refer them to PGM, Lab Manager or Certifier.
  • Maintains good housekeeping of tools, equipment and work area following tests and carry out assigned laboratory clean-up duties.
  • Responsible for follow-up for any non-conformances as a result of calibration, with guidance from supervisor.
  • Responsible for the integrity of customer samples while in the lab as per DQDs.
  • Interacts with jobholder / certifier to plan activities, exchange information, review and approve lab reports and certification records.
  • Maintains and initiates direct certifier and client contact to provide information and answer questions or obtain more product information. Interprets the client’s needs and provides general and specific information about the certification process or status of an application to assist the jobholder and improve overall customer service and satisfaction. Provides certifier / client with detailed interpretation of test results and construction evaluation and how it applies to the status of their certification.
  • May make field trips and assist in work outside the laboratories as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
  • Processes paperwork jobs from opening to distribution where no engineering is involved (i.e. alternative construction, change of records and multiple listings) if required.

    Work Environment

  • Often required to move and lift heavy cylinders and test equipment within OHS’s JHA’s requirements

  • Must be willing to travel as needed
  • Concentration required to work with electricity, compressed gasses and conduct testing
  • Uses sense of sight, touch, hearing and smell to assess results of testing; shock / energy / heat / mechanical hazards and exposure to toxic materials
  • Often required to use environmental test chambers

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Qualification in Chemistry or Environmental Science
  • Practical knowledge of working with test and measurement instruments and equipment, such as: oscilloscope, power supplies, multi meters, power analyzers and chart recorders; operation of machines such as drills, table saw, band saw, bending machines
  • Must be able to read, interpret and develop engineering drawings and test data
  • Must have some knowledge of Laboratory instrumentation, including operating principles and calibration procedures, as well as general Laboratory procedures
  • Ability to manage difficult or unusual projects simultaneously and meet promised delivery dates
  • Must be team-oriented with good interpersonal skills and abilities to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Must be self-motivated and client-service oriented
  • Demonstrated systematic problem-solving ability
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, prioritize, follow-through and evaluate assigned functions and duties
  • Demonstrated ability to work with some supervision. Good communication skills and ability to provide feedback to less experienced personnel when needed
  • Strong organizational, time and project management skills to complete job tasks independently and in a time-efficient manner
  • Technical report writing
  • Computer proficiency (Word processing, Microsoft Word, Excel); keyboarding
  • Use of various lab equipment, instruments and tools
