Description:

Job Title: Labs Technician, System 18
Grade: HAY 30
Location: Teesside, United Kingdom
SABIC is one of the world’s leading petrochemical companies, operating in over 50 countries and employing over 33,000 people worldwide. It has operated on Teesside since 2006, through its subsidiary, SABIC UK Petrochemicals Limited.
SABIC UK Petrochemicals Limited has its headquarters based within the Wilton Centre, but has manufacturing and storage facilities located over two nearby sites, at Wilton International and North Tees. The Wilton International site hosts our two main manufacturing plants: Olefins 6, a large ethylene ‘cracker’, and System 18, one of the world’s largest Low-Density Polyethylene plants. We manufacture chemicals and products such as ethylene and LDPE, the building blocks for the many everyday materials and plastics that we have come to rely on in our modern world. Many of our logistical facilities are located at our North Tees site, which includes numerous storage tanks, underground salt cavities, liquefaction plants and jetties. SABIC currently employs over 330 FTE manufacturing employees as well as over 400 contractors, creating £400m for the local economy through payroll, goods, services and utilities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The Lab Technician is required to be technically self-sufficient in all normal laboratory operations and first-line technical problem-solving. As such, candidates for this role would typically be expected to come from an analytical laboratory background; supported by the appropriate level of technical qualifications (for example HNC, NVQ3 or equivalent). In addition, the job holder must have the skills to be able to plan & deliver more open-ended technical investigations, together with the skills to produce concise written reports of their findings.
The requirement for the job holder to support outside process activities within the LDPE System 18 area also requires the job holder to have experience of working within an industrial manufacturing environment, in particular understanding the key unit operations and hazards involved. An alternative route for appointment into this role may come from an experienced Process Operations candidate, with a sound appreciation of the areas of analytical & physical chemistry.

Responsibilities:

The key purpose of this role is to deliver the safe, reliable and accurate operation of the LDPE System 18 production laboratory and routines. This requires working collaboratively with colleagues across all 5 shifts to support on-line production analysis, as well as leading off-line technical investigations (including customer complaint-based quality investigations initiated by the business), plus development and administrative activities within the lab.
In addition, the job includes elements of process operations support activities to assist the shift operating team in emergency response, peak work load periods (Start up and Shutdown), technical investigations, preparation for maintenance, level 1 maintenance execution and raw materials handling.
The role requires strong verbal and written communication skills in order to successfully engage with a range of internal stakeholders.
