Lead Engineer
The Role
The Lead Engineer at Athena is a versatile engineer with proven experience in the backend, cloud platform and a strong security mindset. They work across multiple squads with a primary goal to uplift the quality of the squad and yet ship high-quality code and solutions to the challenges of helping customers reach their financial independence more quickly.
They are someone who considers the architectural, cost and timeline implications of solutions and drives change while using their experience to inform how change is managed; have first-hand experience and scars from being directly involved in the process within organisations.
As visionaries in the field, you set the standard for engineering excellence that’s held through our technology, our products, and our company.
While this role is a Cloud-focused Engineer role, a good candidate would either have additional secondary experience with Salesforce or be open to work closely with Salesforce; however, is not expected to do any Salesforce development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work on some of our most challenging problems, building high-quality, architecturally sound systems that are aligned with our business needs.
  • Proactively identifies opportunities to reuse or generalise existing services and product features. Avoids duplication of effort by encouraging collaboration.
  • Looks for innovation opportunities between several teams with a willingness to experiment and to boldly confront problems of large complexity and scope.
  • Continuously increasing the efficiency and quality of your team through tooling and experimentation.
  • Reviewing and collaborating with others on internal and cross-team technical proposals.
  • Collaborating with everyone in an open and constructive way.

About You

  • Bachelors in engineering/ technology or any other similar qualification with experience as a tech leader for at least 9+ years.
  • Experience influencing, driving, coaching and mentoring a passionate engineering team.
  • You are adaptable and keen to learn new languages when necessary but already competent and comfortable with at least two of the following programming languages:
  • JavaScript/TypeScript/Node.js, Java or Golang.
  • Deep understanding of technology and architecture in a highly scalable and available setup.
  • You have great interpersonal and communication skills.
  • You have experience with micro-services and async event-based architectures.
  • You can troubleshoot issues in production, help determine root causes and propose the most appropriate solution for the situation.
  • You can collaborate with software engineers, product owners and other IT staff members in order to understand the goals, derive/adapt requirements and implement solutions.
  • You are comfortable working in an Agile, fast-paced DevOps environment.
  • You are a problem-solver and embrace the can-do.
  • You are a team player.
  • You can’t stand the sight of broken things; you just fix them!
