Description:

Due to the pending retirement of the existing Lead Hepatology Nurse Specialist this exciting role has become available; the role is high profile, dynamic, proactive, and pioneering; improving outcomes for patients with chronic hepatology conditions through improved services and quality, in response to challenging healthcare needs and advances in practice.
We are looking for an enthusiastic nurse, who can continue to drive the service forward. You should have extensive hepatology experience and proven management, and leadership experience.
Working within professional boundaries, they will provide holistic care, including history taking and clinical examination, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of care. This will involve both inpatient and outpatient review.
This post will be based primarily at the University Hospitals site, however, there will be travel to the site of Rugby St Cross for outpatient clinics.
The Lead Hepatology Nurse Specialist works with the multi-disciplinary team to meet the needs of hepatology patients, supporting the delivery of policy and procedures and providing nurse leadership as required. Specifically, the Lead Hepatology Nurse Specialist will work closely with and provide nursing management to the Hepatology Nursing team, The Alcohol Care Nursing team, and the Viral Hepatitis Nursing team.
The Lead Hepatology Nurse Specialist will also work closely with the Consultant Hepatologists and the other medical professionals working within Hepatology. They will also have working relationships with the wider gastroenterology medical and nursing team and the gastroenterology ward team.
The Lead Hepatology Nurse Specialist has close working relationships with the multidisciplinary Hepatopancreatic Biliary Team ensuring timely referral of appropriate patients for discussion and management of care.
The Lead Hepatology Nurse Specialist also has working relationships with community alcohol and drug support teams, referring local hospitals and the University Hospital Birmingham Liver department.

To develop, maintain and audit clinics for liver related conditions to reduce length of stay and Emergency Department attendance for hepatology patients.
To facilitate a faster discharge process for patients who require a watch and wait approach to clinical management through regular observations/follow up for patients with hepatological conditions rather than the traditional practice of inpatient care.
To liaise with the multidisciplinary team to maintain patient care pathways for jaundiced patients.
To develop the Hepatology CNS staff to provide cover during leave and assist in long term succession planning
To ensure that new recommendations and guidelines are adapted into clinical practice, in line with current research, to ensure the best outcome for the patient.
To provide clinical leadership and professional education as part of a multidisciplinary team approach to enhance the patient care pathway.
To forge links and partnership working with the multidisciplinary team with expertise in the field of hepatology eg, surgeons, community drug and alcohol services, oncologists
To assist in the line management of the Hepatology CNS team, ensuring that professional standards/local protocols are maintained.
To promote the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust as a National Leader and a centre of excellence in Hepatology and engage in research.
